Rear main seal

Hey just curious I've been reading conflicting info on replacing the rear main seal on my 2000 Tj. I've read that I do not have to drop the trans to change it, just the oil pan but the repair manual I have says I have to drop the trans,It covers multiple years I get that but that is why I'm confused, also I've read that my year is a one piece seal but my repair guide says its a 2 piece, any info would be great. I chose to post here because I'd like to see my local forum stay going

Well I'm a ways from Connecticut, but I'd like to help anyway..

If you have a 4 banger then it's a one piece and you need to drop the transmission

If you have an i6 then it's a 2 piece and you can drop the oil pan, main bearing girdle, and rear main bearing cap and push the seal out.

My 98 4.0 has a 2 piece seal. Its sitting in a box in my garage because we couldn't install it when I had the tranny out to install a new clutch.

Yea I'm not leaking much oil so I am going to wait until I get a new clutch to do the rms,any suggestions on a clutch as far as brand or anything,I would normally trust a mechanic but I am tired of handing him all of my money,I've got some good jeep friends that will watch me do this while they heckle me and drink all my beer but they will help me get the job done.

I put in a LUK kit. Works better than my old worn out stock clutch.
