Beach driving(LBI?).

My fiancee and I wanna take the jeep to the beach tomorrow since we are both off and the weather is supposed to be nice. We were thinking about taking the dogs to the beach and then thought ah hell, weve seen trucks on the beach when guys were fishing.

Ive done some looking and it looks like with a permit from the PD and some standard safety equipment we can ride on the beach in a few places.

Any one done it? Have advice? Doing it tomorrow?

Well I went out there today and had some fun. I mean not a lot of driving to do actually but had some fun with the pupps and fiancee. I was surprised how hard it is for the jeep in that soft of sand.

Yeah, you definitely need to dump a lot of air out of your tires in soft sand! how much was the permit and what does it allow you to do?

I only aired down like 5psi. A friend of mine told me to air way down to like 10psi but hes usually a fool so I didnt listen. lol.

You really gotta air down that much? I honestly thought most of the struggle I had was just a reminder that I need to regear. I really couldnt get out of first gear unless I was hauling ass. It would just bog down if I shifted to second.

As for the permit I found many different stories on line so I just went right to the PD and the cop I talked to told me that the time line for being allowed to drive on the particular beach I was at was up in four days and not to sweat it. He literally told us to just go out there. He said since I wasnt stopping and fishing and just doing a loop and back that no one wouldnt notice me. Cool guy, he drove a lifted cherokee.

How big are your tires and rims? Like height and width of both... You do need to air down pretty low. What gears are you running too?

Are the rims 8" wide or 10"? With an 8" rim you should be able to air down really low and not have problems

Whoops hit send too soon you can run a 12.5 wide tire on an 8" wide rim I do that now. They say it's a lot better for offroading to hold a bead when you air down low for soft sand. You said you're in maple shade right let me know when you're off I'll look

I think theres only 3 of us going out so we're just meeting at the visitor center at batsto around 1230 but i could meet up tomorrow at some point and take a look at the rims for you I'm off as well. Do you know if the previous owner regeared at all? I thought I read that he had in his ad.

No they are stock gears. Im not sure what gears came stock, I looked it up and found a few different possibilities. I was gonna pull the cover off tomorrow actually and check it out.

There is a def regear in my future, 5th gear is next to useless.

Yeah if everything is stock on 35s you're looking at more then a regear to do it right and not have to do it over ugh! Goodluck search around on here at a list of things needed to run 35s stronger rear axle, bigger breaks, regearing etc

I can't remember where, but I recall reading somewhere that for driving on sand, you should air down about 25% of the recommended pressure, so take it down 1/4 of what it should be at full PSI and you should be better on the sand! Prob. see you out there sometime, most likely Isl. Beach State Park!

Do you have to have fishing equipment on the beach? I read and heard they check for it cause its just for fishing, not alowed to just cruse and hang out. Is that true?
