doors off for the summer... could get a ticket
Ok I want to take my doors off for the summer. But I was wondering if I could get a ticket for not having my side mirrors.... I will be driving in NY and NJ

Its NJ, im sure you could get a ticket for not having mirrors. Save yourself the worry and just get these and be done with it. If you can get tickets for not having your dog in a seatbelt then well yea... I believe the law states we need at least one mirror. I know for a fact thats what it is for my bike and i think the same for the jeep. That being said, they dont really care to stop us for it but will write it if they stop us for something else. Ive had my doors off the hole summer so far with no issue and no mirrors. I also did it last summer.

I have these but they shake like mad and they're pretty much useless on the highway. American Outlaw BLK00207 - American Outlaw Black Mirrors for 76-12 Jeep® CJ and Wrangler - Quadratec I'm looking for some Harley mirrors on the cheap. I didn't realize how much I used the side views until the first time I had the doors off. No sir, I don't like it.

In NJ you are required to have a drivers side mirror, not a passenger side though. The last 2 years ive driven around with no doors/no mirrors and havent even seen a cop glance at me twice. You should be alright. But like the others said, if you want to be extra safe, get the mirrors that slide on.

Yes Drivers side and rearview are required. Might not get stopped for not having them, but if you have an accident you will get a ticket and it might be the difference between being put at fault or not. Depending on the size of the town will play a lot on if you get stopped in NJ.

Oh, and make sure you wear your seat belt. There is no way you are going to convince the cop you had it on when he can plainly see you not wearing it. And the old I'll just hook the seat belt and it will look fastened never works on any car, but especially a doorless, topless jeep.

You have to be retarded to not wear you seatbelt when driving around doorless. I sometimes wear mine with the doors on, but every single time i have the doors off, my seatbelt is on. The last thing i need is to fall out of my jeep while im going around a turn or over bumps.

I asked a couple NJ police officers about the mirrors back when I had my first jeep about 14 years ago and all of them said nearly the exact same thing which was as long as you have the rear view you are ok. Now perhaps they just didn't know but that was good enough for me. I never had any issues. And I didn't want to keep asking in case they decided to look into it a little deeper.

NJ Mirror Law

The law in NJ is that you must have a drivers side mirror and either a rearview mirror or a passenger side mirror (NJSA 39:3-71). The right side option must be in place if the view to the rear (through the rearview) is obstructed in any way. The view obstruction INCLUDES even legal rear window tint.

Just because I know what the next question will be - Window tint is completely legal to any degree of darkness on any window rear of the ones to the sides of the driver (NJSA 39:3-75). The windshield can be tinted only on the top 6" (or down to the "AS1" mark imprinted there). Ex. rear and back seat windows are legal to be tinted but front windows and windshield are not to any degree. The exception - medical necessity approved by the Director of DMV (that is a whole process that DMV regulates). The medical exception is the only place that allowed degree of darkness comes into play.

Note: reading just the statutes listed above is not all of the information needed. The statutes refer to "rules promulgated by the Director". Those rules are where all of the specific enforcable guidleines are.
