HELP in deciding!!!

Hey guys. just joined this website today. have been thinking about buying a jeep wrangler unlimited. i have always wanted one since i was a kid and this was back when jeeps weren't as nice like they are today. here is my situation.

I graduated college with a degree in engineering last May. Have been living with parents since then. don't really have too many expenses except for a $300 ticket for NJ transit for commuting to NY for my job. Another big expense is $200 rent my parents charge which is pretty good. i;m still a little salty about that but i understand and its a better deal than what i would get anywhere else.

I recently took a trip to AC in a jeep wrangler 2door and was put in the back seat (i am 6') not a very comfy ride bc i was crammed and i had most of the bags next to me in the backseat bc there was very little available trunk space. Because of these reasons I am pretty sure I want an unlimited.

i have a car that was given to me by my grandfather and kelly blue book puts it at aroun $10,000-9,000. i use this pretty much daily but its mostly for going to and from the gym which is around 5 miles round trip, the occasional trip to my friends/gf houses which are all local and the trips to stores and such. i always like driving to the beach and i would like it even better with a jeep with doors off and everything.

i was wondering if anyone had any input in buying or leasing. the only thing that truly bothers me is that i have a 300 train ticket monthly and thats a decent chunk of moony. i can't do anything about that however.

ideally i want an unlimited sport or sport s. i really would like an mp3 capability in my dash, don't need navigation, want the power convenience package, and definitely AC. everything else i could really do without. i would use it daily during the week for the small trips to friends houses, restaraunts , girlfriends house, and the gym. Seasonally, definitely the beach (potentially drive and surf fish on the beach in a state park i found), some places off road (which i will have to look for), places i know of for cliff diving in NJ/PA. in case anyone cares, i live in edison and the beach i normally go to is belmar which is 40ish miles one way (trying to see fuel consumption).

i really just want a jeep now bc i don't know if i will be able to down the line in life. who knows i might have kids in 10 years and my life could be very different than what it is today. i figured while i am young and don't have much going on and a few bucks to spend, spend it on something i have wanted for a while. any input would be great. thanks guys.

Don't lease buy it because if you lease it limits what you can do to personalize and believe me you will want to personalize

I sit in the front seat of my TJ, driving, if more than one other person wants to tag along, the back seat and it's lack of space is their problem.

If you can afford to buy, then buy. I agree that this is not the vehicle to lease.

I also agree with the fact that I am in the drivers seat, I'm always comfortable. That being said, I like to be the one to drive whenever trips to AC or the such happen, 4 door is more convenient, for me anyhow. Also have a family.

As far as gas mileage, your buying a jeep. Nuff said. Ha ha.

I guess we do not have to sell you on the Jeep. I got a 2011 JKU and we (wife and son) love it. I am a guy that adds sentimental value to everything. If your grandfather gave you a car, keep it. Buy the Jeep and put a few bucks down. You may give it away someday to your grandchild. Buy, don't lease. When you start going out with other jeeps you will always want to add or change something on yours. It is a fun vehicle to ride.

During a "guys" conversation I was asked what kind of car I drive. I answered, "I do not drive a car. I ride a Jeep." My wife gently pulled me by my arm and kissed me.
My Jeep and I are the whole package baby. Yeah!

The Jeep is my second vehicle, for family outings, everyone piles in the Explorer.
Everyone has their own tastes, myself I don't care for the Unlimited models.
Nothing against them, just not my preference.

It's up to you if you can afford to put money down/payments. Just manage your money right and you can be done in 5 years or less.

You are young, dont plan to go too far with it. Why not consider an older model used or a slightly used certified one. I agree with others, buy. I have a 2 & 4 year old and the jku is good for us and my wife. It is my DD/weekend warrior. I enjoy it very much. Good luck to you!

I am in literally the exact same situation for you. I bought a used 09 limited a couple weeks ago and I'm very happy with my decision. I recommend selling your current car first before you buy the wrangler. I still have the car my grandfather willed to me and I've been driving/fixing up/enjoying the hell out of my jeep that I haven't had time to sell it and now I'm paying 2 insurances. Which is a pain for me as I'm living on an entry level salary. It sounds like you can survive at least a couple weeks without a car, so I would recommend that.

Best of luck in the process

I bought my JK thinking of what I want to do with it. Get to work, ride the trails twice a month, not a fan of 4 doors, and love manual trans. Ended up with a 2012 2dr Rubicon. I excluded thinking about the gf (she can't drive stick and doesn't like off-roading), visitors and passengers (2 door.. being cramped is their problem, not mine), possible kids in the future (again with the 2 door), and gas mileage (it's a jeep). And I must say.. I am happy as can be =)

Too many other decisions in life include everyone else. This one I made for ME.
