How to reply to this sales email..

Below is the email I received from a salesman regarding my request for a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (power locks & windows/automatic/hardtop) for 28k OTD with 3k down payment.

How would you respond to the below:

"May I ask how you came up with the 28k otd? For us to sell a vehicle for 28k otd, the vehicle has to be sold for $25556.54 before tax and fees.

The MSRP of a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 24S Package with just a hardtop is $31685, with an invoice of $30529. We unfortunately cannot discount a Wrangler $6129 off of MSRP.

I can probably get a 2 door with the same equipment for that price or possibly used one, but not a new 24S with hardtop!"

^(FYI: I've seen people get a 2013 JKU for 26.5k OTD/just testing the waters..)

Give me your best pitch back!!

Id keep it simple and say...

Nope, thats not what I asked for. No big deal, I dont NEED the Jeep and I have other dealers Im speaking to also.

Its in fact now what you asked for, and if they know youll walk you have the power.

Jeep Buying Experience

If you've done your research (sites like Edmunds, etc) you should have a good idea of what is reasonable to pay. Lots (but not all) dealers will gladly give you a price via email. Some will use the old tricks to try to get you in the showroom. Blah, blah, skip those guys.

When I bought mine, it was a basic 2-dr sport, AC and Auto the only options. Easy to find as a prebuilt, main thing that would sway me to one dealer over another was color (and I got the deep red and I'm very happy).

Get email prices from one dealer and fire them to another. I set a range of dealers pretty far between eastern CT all the way up to Boston. I guess it depends on where you live as to how many quotes you'll get. I actually had a price $300 cheaper then what I paid but it was black and I didn't want black.

Once you get some prices in hand, send them out to the next guy (heh, preferably a local guy). Most will be more than happy to match.

Thanks for the replies guys, check out what I received via email this am. Seems too good to be true/just trying to get me in the dealership. I'm looking to buy but the below would be too good to pass up on?

"Our monthly special on that vehciel right now is $129 a month for lease and you can purchase it for $32,840. When can you make it by to check it out?"

$129 a month seems kinda low to me, but I have no experience with leasing (I drive 25k a year avg, so it never worked for me).

I'd press for more pricing details. Ask for a breakdown of all charges. Be annoying as this is usually a good chunk of cash for most ppl (I mean auto purchases in general).

If they're straightforward, they should be able to give a breakdown. At very least an otd price. If they keep pushing you to come in, then I'd consider looking elsewhere. Unless haggling in person is fun for you, then have at it. My last 2 vehicles (my jeep and my wife's 2011 civic) I had the prices in hand when I walked in the door. I basically went in and filled out the paperwork.

So it looks like the salesperson is refusing to answer the list of questions I have regarding the lease parameters until I come in physically and "demonstrate that I'm a serious buyer." Unbelievable.
