As far as I know it is legal as long as you have side view mirrors. I was unable to find any information on an inspection checklist. The NJ DMV site was very difficult to find information. They do have 4 "entertaining"(boring, awkward) videos with checking the basic items like lights and brakes as whatnot. Though I see if there is nothing in writing saying your are required to have doors on the vehicle then a police officer has no excuse to give you a ticket. Ask them to point out where it states in the vehicle code that you have to have doors.

In VA you have to have at least one side view mirror. And soon my doors will be off when the cold goes away.

Would be a good idea to ask a local police officer or a licensed inspection station this question.

I have never had an issue and I am doorless at least half the year. I've driven down to VA before without doors.

I've got this little sticker, from the factory, on my hard top. It states that the doors are for protection from the elements only. Just a thought.

You are required to maintain all oem safety equipment (headlights, signals (horn and lights), glass, passenger restaints, and mirrors) in order to maintain road worthyness and pass an NJ inspection. You will fail inspection if you do not have mirrors. Now, whether or not you will get pulled over and get a ticket is another story.
On a side note... I built my chopper without turn signals and only one mirror. It is perfectly legal because it was built this way. If you buy a motorcycle and remove the turn signals it is illegal bacause you removed an oem installed safety device.

From NJ DMV:
"To pass a safety inspection, vehicles are expected to be maintained according to the original manufacturer’s specifications, including but not limited to: brakes, suspension, steering, wheel alignment, headlights, taillights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, window and hood operation, glazing, turn signals, mirrors, etc. "

"If your vehicle fails for safety or mechanical defects, you may have it repaired by the mechanic of your choice. No proof of repair will be required – it will simply be retested. To pass re-inspection, repairs must bring your vehicle back in compliance with original manufacturer's specifications for: brakes, suspension, steering, wheel alignment, headlights, taillights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, window and hood operation, glazing, turn signals, mirrors, etc."

and lastly...

"N.J.S.A. 39:3-71 Mirrors - Every passenger vehicle manufactured after 1/1/65 must be equipped with interior and driver's side mirrors."

You have to have mirrors on the outside. Just to let you know, I passed inspection in NJ with the doors off and roof off. The guy was cool and let me pass, but did say he is supposed to see the windows in the doors and the windows of the roof. I got lucky. If you're going thru inspection, I would leave the doors/roof/windows on to be safe, but you CAN drive with the doors off as long as you have mirrors.
