I was a lifeguard there for 7 years. Fishing is pretty decent. I've seen a bunch of different things caught from blues to sharks.

I plan on getting a permit as well during the summer, but mostly so I can find better spots to surf. There's plenty of beach, so you're bound to find a good spot.

I've spent plenty of time down there on the beach but never got a permit. I plan on getting one this year and plan on doing a little fishing and some family time on the beach.

Yes I drive on the beach w/ a permit. And They have air stations before you drive on the beach where you can lower and inflate tires before and after. No shovel needed, But I always have an offroad kit in the truck.

I think you can just go to the park building and buy the pass... Island Beach State Park, New Jersey <----- May explain more. I have fished there, and it is a nice beach to fish at. I wouldnt start honestly fishing until March or so, if you go now its to cold so you wont catch much. I have a pass for Brigantine for the beach and i wont start fishing until late feb, early march once it warms up.

if you do buy a pass please do it for fishing reasons....the last few years so many people bought up passes just so that they can tan/swim away from all the bennies, even though they are bennies themselves. and don't get me started with the surfers-sorry ;-)

I agree with you 100%. I've gone there when there was more j---off's laying around than fishing.
I guess the Rangers don't enforce the 'you have to be actively engaged in fishing' rule. They should....

i go all the time iv been going for 15 years in order to get a permit you need a fishing pole and bait for people 12 years of age and older you also need a air pressure gauge a spare tire 1/4 tank of gas a jack, shovel, planks of wood i think 12x12 to put the jack on, first aid kit, fire extinguisher tow strap or chains and when before you drive on you have to air your tires down if you dont you will get stuck just trying to drive on if you go all the way to the end. and when you go to get the permit the rangers will check to make sure you have everything. if you wanna sleep on the beach you have to be actively fishing from 12AM-4AM they dont want people to think its a campground no tents are allowed on the beach fires are allowed up to a certain point and no alcohol. there might be more stuff you need i have to look i have the paper in my room somewhere. there is three different entrances to drive on the beach and the first one you have to be actively fishing all the time but the other 2 areas you only have to fish from 12-4AM. when you enter the beach an you see someone driving out back up and let them come out first its easier for you to back out than have them back onto the beach or dont try to move over cause you could mess the tracks up and theres a chance for the other person to get stuck. this is the list from the website
Tire Pressure Gauge
A Standard First Aid Kit
Shovel
Snatch Rope
Jack and Large Support Board
Flash Light
Spare Tire or Equivalent
Self-Contained Toilet (where applicable)
Standard Fire Extinguisher
Road Flares
Trash bags
Tide Chart

Just got my permit for IBSP. My dad and I used to fish here before he passed away.. but I'm continuing the tradition!
We caught a variety of things.. stripers, sea robins, skate, list is pretty long. We were there when someone caught a small shark.
Bring bug repellant too; the horse flies are sometimes terrible. If there's wind from the west be warned.. it's a hell of a day avoiding bites.
