Salt or Sweet / NJ Fishing

Seems there are a few avid fishermen here. I figgured I'd start a thread to keep your fellow Jeeper fishing guys informed of your results. This thread will keep some of the Trail threads clear of fishing and beach stuff. Don't know how this'll work out but maybe we can give it a shot.
Good luck and tight lines...

Went to Sandy Hook Sat. 5/25 in the AM. Stayed a couple of hours, got skunked. The weather was really miserable, was more than happy leaving. Went to the Highlands for a couple of beers and a burger.

Last Tuesday, I got my permit for Island Beach. No luck, but didn't fish long. Also it was my first time surf fishing. The damn clams kept coming off during the cast. But I had fun anyway, so I'm hooked!

I may go back this Tuesday.

Gixxer,

We're you tying the clams on with that stretch-string? We wrap it like 6-7 times with that stuff and then tie 2-3 knots so the string won't come loose....

I was thinking about tying the clams on with something. No matter how I hooked them they would come off sometimes.

I usually try to hook the clams thru the muscular edge. I've used small rubber bands also.
Needless to say it's a real pain in the ass. Thats why I use bunker when bait fishing. At least it stays on the hook.

So here's my plan for the weekend. I'm heading to Island Beach tomorrow, and staying at the Island Beach Motor Lodge overnite. Anyone who wants to come fishing, you're welcome to come along.

Stop at Betty and Nicks and pick up some of the string they sell for hooking clams. They'll know what you're looking for. Good luck!

Try letting them sit in salt over night. It toughens them up so they don't tear when you cast. Also try casting with no lead and let the clam go out with the tide naturally ,you will get better results.

Is fresh better though just in general?

I'll have two poles in the water, so maybe I'll try one with no lead. I think it might be windy tomorrow though.....

I don't have any experience with salted clams but I remember reading in The Fisherman that they prefered fresh over salted.
Hit Sandy Hook yesterday 6/1 real early, no Stripers but 2 nice Blues. Catch and release.

Might try Sandy Hook Saturday 6/15, have some health issues on the homefront, so I'll see what happens.

I never posted back , but it is about presentation. Natural is always the best way to fish. Casting and letting it be ,is ok. But pay attention. If you can cast fresh,Awsome. Any time you fish bait ,natural is the only way to go. Find out what bait is in the area at the time and use that info to the fullest.(crabs, bunker, clams, eels, penuts, what ever).the tide the bait , it all comes together in junction. Find the formula and you will catch fish . But you have to be persistent ,and keep trying. I have been surf fishing for 30 years and it changes all the time. My grandfather told me bass are ifee, you just keep trying . Tight lines

Hey Rob
I see the western LI adress, do you fish Montauk or do you stay around the Jones Beach area?

Scott, I'm not 100% sure what time yet, I'm shooting to get there by 11. Maybe a bit before, maybe a bit after. I got the CB in, we could use channel 10 to hook up.

I'll be getting on the Parkway just before the Driscoll Bridge. Right where 287 comes in.

I'm probably only bringing one pole.

I can't miss your JK! And I'll be the only black TJ covered in mud!
