stolen veh. reports in nj

hi all, i posted this in off topic, but wanted to here as well, hopin more local members might see it.

does anyone here know how long a police dept. can hang onto, & not release a stolen veh report to the owner of the veh, the person who reported it stolen, or an insursnce company?

i had a veh. stolen off my mechanics lot last nov. it was recovered in jan. completely stripped!!! since then the p.d. has been unwilling to release a copy of the report to my mechanic (who reported the theft along with several others from his lot that night) me (the legal owner) or my mechanis ins. company. ( i had liability only, so he filed a claim thru his ins. company, along with claims for the other vehicles)

this is goin on 7mos w/no end in sight!!! it just doesnt seem right to me, but im not a cop, or a lawyer.

What do they tell you?

When I ran this by a cop friend he said 2 things....

1) Sounds like the PD thinks the shop is being shady and they are investigating them.

3) Call fox on your side(which is what my wife said too! lol). I laughed when he said it since I had already read this other reply. He said that guy gets under the skin of any local gov/offices and gets answers!

we found out from a confidential friend that the cop suspects a shady deal between me & my mechanic. he believes we have nothing to do with the other 4 veh. stolen, but somehow its just "suspicious " that my suburban was parked with his shop trucks. its an 84 rusted out woods truck... thats why it wasnt parked inside with other customerw cars overnight. just like.about 40 other times he did work on it for me. plus, my mechanic was lookin to buy it, so thats another reason it was parked there, he wanted it for his plow business so he was lookin it over to see if he could rig up a plow mount to make the purchase feesable. so i told the cop, hes out a plow truck, and im out a truck... who wins from this shady deal on an 84 rusted out suburban???

also, my mechanic does business with the twp, as well as other twp's and has been a local business for at least 20yrs that i know of. another cop in same.dept. even told this cop... look it was a raw deal... theres nothin shady. especially since his vehicles were recovered with a ton of damage. 1 was stripped, 1 was run into a tree, one was recovered a couple mikes.down the road broke down. they were all trucks at least 20yrs old he plowed with. insurance settlement wont even cover 1 new truck to replace all the damaged ones.

i really dont wanna piss off the locals, then my jeep will be under a.microscope everytime im on the road, and ill he honest... its not 100% street legal as it sits.
