1967 stevens M416 trailer questions

I Bought a Stevens M416 trailer and want to fix it up. Im looking to buy a new axle with 5x5 hubs to match the tires to my jeep. Clean the body up by removing all the old paint and checking all the rust. Paint the tub to match my 13' JKUR True Blue Pearl. Put some form of liner in the bed and on all the frame rails. Find or Build a metal Box that can hold my Honda Eui2000 watt generator and maybe a gas can. Not sure yet but maybe replace the pintle hitch with a new up todate hitch/reciever.

The problem is I have never done anything like this before and I dont' even know where to start. I have a feeling when I replace the axle I'll have to replace the springs and maybe some other things. It's already been rewired for 12v lights ect but they are black out lights. I want to replace those with LED lights so i can be seen not ones that are black when not on :P

It would be nice if anyone knew anything about M416 trailers or any adice on where to get parts. Or Should I sand the frame to remove all the surface paint and rust or a sand blaster? Not even sure what a sand blaster does :P

I live in the Dunkirk Area. Im picking the trailer up Tuesday of this week and i'll post some pic's of it and the condition I plan on taking lots of pics from start to finish

Well I havn't gotten any help but that's ok, I just ordered my new axle, Shocks, Leaf Springs and couplers for the leafs. about $600 bucks and well worth it. Next im going to get the matching 2013 rims and tires and mount those, then drop it off and Southern Maryland Sandblasting before I take it to a welder friend. I took the old tires off already to get my axle and spring measurements. Talk about difficult I don't think they have been off in over 10 years had to pry them off with a 2x3 :P

Sounds like a cool project. Id have your welder buddy fix what needs to be fixed and then have it blasted. Then I would spray epoxy primer over it and your ready for paint I would keep the pintle hitch as its way stronger than a standard ball hitch....and most people won't be able to steal it

I just picked up a M416, lots of rust but no holes. I'm scraping it now and plan to use rust converter, then roll on some bedliner for the inside and probably just primer the exterior for now. not sure if I want to go Green, Camo, or Orange to match my jeep......

I was going to order a Max coupler from Sierra 4x4 and have him weld/fabricate something that keeps the "Peg Leg" as I call it in working order. I was going to sandblast it all, paint the frame with a black bed liner and match the true blue pearl to from the jeep to the tub and black fenders. I have 4 weeks to wait for the new parts I ordered and goin to give sand blasting a attempt since I have nvr done it and the Craftsman sandblaster only cost $50.

It's been awhile, how is the project progressing?

Sorry, didn't think anyone was intrested. I have a new 3,500 lb axle, leaf springs and bolting hardware, new matching rims that match my 2013 JKUR Got in touch with a welder that is going to build me a trailgate. I couldn't get a axle long enough for what I wanted so im going to have to use 2" spacers to clear the 32" BFG mud terrain tires. Just waiting on a break in the weather to do some work outside since I don't have a garage. will prob start up on it once the weather gets alittle warmer

If you want to check it out, the last 2 pages are my M416 build, it may give you some ideas and point out a few issues. http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/mat...-160398-7.html

Ok got my 2013 matching rims in from ebay for only $120 each compared to the Mopar 480 each. Had some 255/75/R17 BFG mud terrains mounted today and ordered my Bora 2" spacers so my new axle works out. I'll have to take some photos when I start putting everything together. I also looked into the price of the sand blaster rental for jims air in Prince Fredrick. only $204 for the whole day for the trailer air compressor 150 lbs sand hopper and hoses and face mask with air supply. once the weather breaks im going to hit this project full force. still looking into new fenders from a metal fabricator near the house to make it legal. Took off a fender today to let them match them with just wider ones. 14" fenders instead of the stock 9.5" ones.

Still need to find a good weld thru primer to paint it after I sand blast and get all the misc. hardware for when I replace the axle U bolts for the new shocks. need Stainless hardware for mounting the fenders and tub back to the frame any recommendations would be nice

So it was alittle bit warmer out so I started tinkering with the trailer. Started to unbolt the tub from the frame and noticed that the previous owner that cut the back of the trailer for a make shift tailgate welded some L channel to the tub and the frame making removing the tub impossible with out a grinder. (barrowing one form work this week) Talked to a friend of the family that lives in DE and he has alot of things I can use on his farm so might be relocating it to his shop there where I'll have acess to all kinds of toys like welders, sheet metal benders and all a pile of parts from all his trailers on the farm. I just hope I can reuse the U bolt plates since the shocks mount to them. He knows alot more about this then me also so might be able to accelerate the completion time of the over all build. Not to mention he is going to teach me how to weld

Ok started break down. I ended up flipping the trailer upside down and removing everything that way for now. Took of the old axle and leaf springs. Snapped almost every nut/thread off the U bolts removing the axle. Going to go pick up some new ones to match my 2 3/8 axle prob friday after work. The left springs are the right length but one side of the leaf is threaded for some reason going to drill that out to let the old pin fit back in. Found a website that sells almost every park I need from all the old jeeps. (Willys Jeep Parts Specialists | Kaiser Willys Jeep Parts & Willys Restoration) I broke the cotter pins off the leaf spring bolts so I will prob order new ones. Im now going to be using a 2 3/8 axle over the old 2 1/2 so im hoping the holes on the U bolt plate still work out seems to be some play in it. will sand blast it and put a coat of rustolem truck bed liner on it to make it look new again. had to clean up after that since I ran out of light. I did pick up my new fenders tho. Had a place call Bay Metal in Ownings do them turn out Identical to originals but they are wide enough to fit the 32" BFGs that match the jeep under them I'll post some photos that I snapped on my photo tomorrow afternoon when I get some free time.

I painted the fenders yesterday while the weather was in the low 60's and they turned out very nice. Used rustolem truck bed liner and it went on very well. tested it on the inside of fenders first and it bleed alittle but once I got use to it the outside of fenders look great! I'll post some photos when I get a chance. Wheel spacers are on there way from NV should be here next friday according to the shipping progress.

Going to have a 2" reciever mounted to the back of the trailer I think and maybe 2 D ring shackles to each side. I'll do that when I finish sand blasting the frame and then paint the whole frame with the bed liner I like it so much.

I put the wheel spacers on and mounted the tires/rims on the trailer to see how it looked. Sits really High at the moment. Going to move the axle over the leaf springs and that will lower it 7 inch putting the tires more in the fenders and making the ride height ruffly 3 inch's over the height of the pintle hitch on the jeep. that works out well since im putting a 2.5" AEV lift on the jeep next So things are coming to gether. it's raining outside atm or I would be out there working on it. Have alot more photos of it just ask if your intrested.

Still raining outside and it's about 40 degrees out so im not working on trailer and depressed. Scheduled a Maryland Inspection for monday at 3:30pm just down the street about a mile from my house going to be the frist time out of drive way since all the new parts have been added. Not sure what is involved with the inspection but the frame does have a bit of rust on it hope that is not going to fail becase of it. I am also planning on replacing that back steel on the trailer frame with a new piece so I can add a 2" reciever to hold my bike rack and some D ring pull points if I ever get it stuck. Hope to get it on the road to take it to the farm and start the welding on it.

Loaded the trailer down today with as much firewood that I could fit in it. the trailer didn't even dip alittle bit with the new suspension! I mean it was poplar and oak mixed but it did a great job of hauling it. Not to mention it's the first time pulling with the jeep since I bought it last year and it did great. Slightly slower speeding up but very smooth drive even pulling the load.

Been alittle bit since I worked on trailer but wanted to say im still not done. Looking into Sand blasting and painting it with a weld thru primer atm. still debating on some mods I want to do to it like a hard top to make it dry storage for camping with a RTT. ect. I'll keep posting as I work on it. Funds have been tight and since I got it on the road I have been using it alot. Spent some money on a new Rough Country stubby bumper and stinger tho
