Assateague requirements

I understand most of the requirements but I have questions about one.

-- A vehicle jack sufficient to lift one wheel clear of the sand.

Is the stock jack that comes with a Jeep sufficient, or should I look for something else?

That (in theory) should be fine, but you're going to want to bring like a 24"x24" piece of pretty thick plywood to set it on.

Question about Assateague. How easy of a drive is it? I'm looking to go just to drive around on the beach, not so much for advanced off roading so if the chances of getting stuck are pretty high I might pass right now. Plan on going with the wife and two kids.

Also, is off-roading a good way to see the wild horses?

Does it costs something like $80 plus for a one day permit?

Correcto - at least on the VA side...that's really the only side I've been driving on...and with that I believe it was for 12 months from purchase date. At least I hope so. On the back of the sticker they gave us was EXP. 5/2013, so I can only imagine we were legal last month.

Maryland side is the same. Best part is the pass is for one year from date of purchase... not calendar year.

My wife, dog and I have a great time down there.

Good news, first time jeep owner when it arrives of course. Will be an easy drive from Salisbury to the beach, never had a 4wd though, but should be easy enough to take the wife and little one onto the beach.

Not sure on if you will have to do it there but might think about airing down to allow your jeep a better chance on the sand. It should increase your footprint. (When I was at Rausch creek they took us down to 20 lbs for the stock tire/rims) I was told they have air compressors for airing back up there in places. This is mostly for soft sand if it's just dirt roads I wouldn't worry about it. Just a thought I would do more research from there website.

I plan on heading over there for the frist time in a few weeks. Im trying to surf fish and camp for the night or two with the wife, two kids and dog. I think the season pass is from the date of purchase good for one year.

The day pass is $90. There is also a $15 entrance fee or $30 for the year. The night pass is a different fee. There are specific rules for camping on the beach. No tents. It has to be a self contained camper such as those that go in a truck bed.

Thats sucks. So no camping in tents on the beach on the MD side? I may have to reconsider.

Nope. We were going to do the same but decided to go to Hatteras instead. Camping on the beach, no permits (back then), no ungodly flying insects.

I may have to check out Hatteras or Carolina Beach. I called the ranger station over at Assateague and there definitely is not camping on the beach. Looks like I will be going surf fishing and then camping at one of the camp sites. Plan is to go there next weekend.

Carova beach (northern part of OBX) is free to wheel on, but there is no camping. Cape Hatteras Seashore has a fee to pay to drive on the beach but at the campgrounds, you are camping in the dunes.
