Back when I had my first jeep "89 YJ" I would visit family in Pottstown, PA and was warned by other Jeepers that they target you in that town if your doors are off. One day I was in a parking lot and a local cop gave me a warning because of my doors being off. I questioned him about this and explained my point that it was the same as having the soft top removed. He was cool with me and didn't bust my balls but explained that after I believe it was 1972 doors became standard equipment on all Jeeps. They also require you to remove the nuts so the doors can be removed which means they must stay on to be legal even if you relocated your mirrors. He did say also that they look on the older CJ's to see if they were made before 72 and will not cite them because of this. On this note most police do not seam to bother you if your doors have been removed but they can use this argument if they wanted to just as we can use the soft top removal = door removal argument.

Nope it is legal in all 50 states to drive without doors on. Just make sure you have the correct number of mirrors they can give you a ticket for that.

The only thing that I found so far was "No person shall operate a motor vehicle or combination on a highway unless the vehicle or combination is equipped with at least one mirror, or similar device, which provides the driver an unobstructed view of the highway to the rear of the vehicle or combination. This section shall not apply to any special mobile equipment, commercial implement of husbandry or implement of husbandry that is not so equipped by the original manufacturer."

which was found at
PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services - Vehicle Code

but in this file
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms.../chapter45.pdf

I also found this, but it relates to getting a vehicle inspected

"Doors - A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be equipped with doors of a type used as original equipment. The doors shall open and close securely unless the vehicle has been manufactured or modified to the extent that there is no roof or side. "

I found it at
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms.../section_e.pdf

This is all for PA, but I can't seem to find if you can drive on the road without them. But like JeepMedic was saying up above you have to unbolt the doors in order to take them off. You also have to unbolt the hard top to take it off (at least on the JK's)

We just got our new Jeep the other day, so we'll see when summer comes what the cops say. I just like to have something on paper to explain the law.

I was driving one time with no doors, no top, 2 kegs in the back seat (buckled in of course), and some idiot standing on my front seat holding on to the roll bar. Thankfully we didn't pass any cops that time... Never had a problem doorless in CT

The cops around where I live are pricks they bust you for almost anything. I'm surprised they haven't got me for my tires sticking out past the flares yet.

I was talking to a fellow keeper today and she said one of her reletives was driving there jeep just resently without doors and the cops pulled her over and fined her ever though she had the mirror relocation brackets with mirrors in them. Because the cop said that's not where the mirrors are on it from factory

This is BS, every Jeep commercial and advertisement has a top-less/ door-less Jeep... I didn't see any fine print... Just boycott and go door-less. If they ticket you fight it... If you see some punk kids acting like idiots without doors (hanging out of it, standing, surfing, etc...) fight them, and tell them thanks a**hole for ruining all the fun.

Most states have some laws in force requiring tires to have some sort of coverage to prevent throwing rocks up. The only you'll be able to beat that is by doing something like this

Man it would piss me off to live somewhere that they would harass a person over things like that.

Why not get the law changed? Organize the off road community in your state, start a movement, especially about the doors off thing. Start a movement!

Well what would you like them to have a specific tool for testing fender coverage of the tire? I mean legally your tires are supposed to be covered in most states
