I'm in the area... east of Rochester a bit, but not too far.

Finger Lakes 4x4 is the only club around that I've heard of. Went to one of their meetings last week for the first time. I wasn't all that impressed, honestly. I guess I was hoping for something more Jeep specific.

What do you drive?

I live out in farm country, so I mostly just play around on friends'/family's private land. There is a place called Whispering Pines in Lyons (15 min. from me) that I believe is usually open to the public. I haven't checked it out yet, but I'd like to sometime. Not sure of any other places. I'd like to find out if any of these power line roads are legal to ride on.

Whispering Pines is the only place to legally trail ride in the area.. The power lines are considered private property. Please don't go there. As to whispering pines lots of fun.. Stock friendly when dry, a stock jeep can basically get through most of the park. But in contrast when snow covered.. best to have some lift, aggressive at's or a mt, and lockers.

Seasonal Rd's are hard to find.. Not many listed on the maps to be specific as seasonal.. but those are a common snow wheeling option that is legal for nys. There is one other park that is public on the other side of the state that I am aware of. Some private owned places that are open a few times a year, best keep an eye on FL4x4 or WNYO for those.

Beer sorry you had a negative experience with FL4x4, before I moved away I spent some time with them both at there meetings and wheeling W.P.. Great times I had.. Be sad to here if they have gone backwards in how they operate..

Soon to be living in Hamburg NY and perhaps see you on the trail at some point along the way..

No worries, I'm not into illegal wheeling. Besides, getting arrested for anything at all would have serious career implications for me. I've got enough friends and family members who have land to keep myself more than occupied. I am going to hit WP one of these days though.

I wouldn't call my experience with FL4x4 really negative, just not what I had envisioned. Plus it was just a club meeting where I knew absolutely no one, so I felt a little like an outsider. I think the next time they have an event at WP or somewhere, I'll go check them out again.

It's a incorporated club that is part business part pleasure when it comes to it's meetings.. The real fun is if they go out for food after.. good times talking to folk about there wheeling experiences and tech and what not.. Glad you have that option of available land.. I wish I did in the past.. Glad your not into illegal wheeling.. I've detoured many in my past from doing it after thats all they did for the longest time.. FL4x4 does a W.P run almost every month.. and a group always hits up PA every month as well.. when you get a chance to wheel with some of them let me know what you think.. Always interested to hear about outside opinions of clubs I have interacted with before

Hey, i am a brand new jeep owner in the Rochester, NY area. I have been thinking about going to check out the fingerlakes 4x4 open event next month at Whispering Pines to hopefully learn a little bit about how to off-road safely. Is anyone else from the area attending this event?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I found this thread through a Google search and joined specifically to respond. Sorry if it's frowned upon, but I don't have a Jeep. I drive a 2011 F150.

I recently moved to the city of Rochester from the country, and I'm dying to hit some mud! I drove over an hour last weekend to get to some state land trails, but the gates were closed for all the good trails.

I'd love to get in touch with someone from the area and do some mudding! Whispering pines sounds cool. The website says they have "reasonable pricing" but they don't give any specifics. Anyone have some more info?

Anyone in the area that would like to go mudding please PM me. Thanks!

It's all good. Most people don't want to wheel there shinny new 4x4's outside of the jeep community so it is awesome to know that you are doing so. At last check, Whispering pines is 25 for the driver and 5 per passenger. Under the age of 7 I think it is, is free. www.fingerlakes4x4.com is rochester based, I recomend checking them out. good people and good fun

Cool! Didn't think I'd get a response so quick.

I've looked into fingerlakes and plan on joining up as soon as I'm able. The only problem is I missed the August meeting due to moving, and I'm going to miss the September meeting due to business. They meet the last week of the month, so I'm afraid I won't be able to do any wheeling with them until spring.

Thanks for the info on Whispering Pines. I might go check it out tomorrow. I don't have anyone to go with though, and you sure can't pull yourself out.

Yea some people think I'm crazy for wheeling my truck. I didn't buy it to baby it though. Right now the suspension is stock, but I plan to lift it fairly soon. The stock Goodyear AT/S tires aren't anything special but they do the job in the mud.

yeah don't wheel alone and make sure you call a day or two ahead to let them know your comming when ever you do go out to wheel there. As to FL4x4 to join there site and to wheel with them you don't need to be a memeber. There are only a handfull of club only activities they do a year and the rest including all but 1 trip to WP are open to anyone. Good luck with the moving and best of luck with the FL4x4 crew.

Thanks, I just posted on their forum. It looks like most of their events are pretty far away though...like Rausch Creek and some place in Virginia. I was looking for something a little more local. I'm definitely interested in getting together with a few people in the area to do some mudding ASAP, club or otherwise.

true, some how the majority of wheelers in wny have boat loads of money from a money tree I have yet to find and they go down to pa alot. If you don't see anything for WP posted. call up wp and set a date a few weeks down the road then post up that date on fl4x4 and people will follow along. Sometimes just a handfull and sometimes as manny as 15 or more. I take it you got good recovery points and a recovery strap with loop ends. that is the most important thing I can recomend you have with you before you go out then after that a cb radio and so on and so forth. They got a good basic lift of trail gear recomendations on there site somewhere. In the end let them know your knew and interested in checking out whispering pines. People will go as long as they get enough warning.

Thanks for the info XJ Knight. Are you from the Rochester area? I actually found a post by a guy who wants to go to WP tomorrow! If that doesn't work out I'm gonna try to get something going next weekend.

My trucks got 2 tow hooks up front, and I got a hook that goes into my hitch receiver for the back. I always carry a 30 foot recovery strap and a D-Ring with me. I suppose another strap is probably a good idea because it's definitely possible to get stuck 30 feet out from solid ground.

My truck has a rear E-Locker that I've been dying to try out. I've used it playing around, but haven't been able to find any terrain where I actually needed it.

if it's wet there you will need it, especially if you got lower end AT tires. You will be in the woods so hope you don't mind some pin striping. and as for me I live just south of buffalo and use to be the events coordinator for a wny offroading club that no longer exists

I'm a southern guy from Little Rock area, moved up here with my job and new to wheelin'

I'd like to get involved with a wheelin' club up here in Rochester (or close), and expand my fun experiences, lol! I did some wheelin' in Troy, PA while I was down there for a few months on some private land (permission granted!), and damn near got my ass stuck in some soup, lmao! There was a high line pass that went near vertical that I would chug up and over for grins and thrills, which is more than I can say for my co-worker...who owns a jacked up 2500 Silverado Duramax, hahaha!
His excuse?
..eeehh...HE didn't wanna chance getting stuck...

Fun times!

As soon as I can get this motor issue resolved, I wanna do some trail riding and have fun with some fellow Jeepers
