I tried responding to your PM, but it doesn't seem to be going through...
Hey Ryan. Thanks for responding. Very cool
Smith's Point trails are on the beach with some cool trails in the dunes. Unfortunatley, you will need a Green Key Card that you purchase from the county. It's a county card that will give you cheaper admissions and the ability to make reservation (camping/golf/etc...) to all county facilities. But, on top of that, then you have to purchase the beach permit (can't purchase beach pass without green key card). The green key is good for several years and I can’t recall what I paid 2 years ago. I believe the beach pass was somewhere around $70. Here's a link. Suffolk County Government - Outer Beach Rules and Regulations
A little pricey, but I totally got my money's worth last summer. You can hang on the beach with a fire/BBQ/cooler. I was going 3 or 4 times a week. If it's nice on Saturday, I think I may head down there after work to get my 2011 pass and hit some trails.
I will definately hit you up when I plan on checking out the place you mentioned.
Good luck, Bro!!!
Say Good Bye to your "Cool" new wheeling spot. Now that it's been advertised on the net unless it is a completley legal spot to wheel you guys are now going to loose it. Shoulda kept it to PM's and kept it a secret. I hope the local guys who have been going there for awhile don't see the OP on here, if they shut it down the OP might be hunted down.
Don't be so quick to dismiss him. I don't know about the hunt down part, but Jones is pretty dead on. This has been going on in upstate NY (Albany to points North) for as long as i can remember. I grew up on ATV's (started riding at age 5) and transitioned to Jeeps years later. We've lost so many trails (that were legal- until the state illegally closed the seasonal use highway, but that's another story) thanks to NYS DEC and a bunch of people publicly talking about them and posting detailed locations on public forums. We have a code of conduct on my club forum that prohibits people from publicly naming trails and locations. Used to work out well. We just post up "trail ride, this date, trail rating, any equipment requirements, PM me for details". And if it's questionable at all, we don't advertise it. That gives everyone who follows the rules a bad name, and in this heightened climate of trendy faux-environmentalism, we need to keep this in mind, and guard our trails from those who would use the information to get them shut down. Think of it this way: you can wheel wherever you want now, but where will you wheel tomorrow, when the trail is gated, blocked with cement blocks, or fenced off?
Good news is from what Musicfan posted, it sounds like it's legal. If you guys are looking for clubs to ride with, Check out Long Island Off Road. I know the LIOR guys and have wheeled with them a handful of times when they come up my way. Great bunch of people, and they know their stuff!

I'm bringing this thread back up. I'm picking up a Rubicon in couple of weeks and want to start off-roading. I live in Farmingdale and would be down with meeting up sometime.
I'm from Nassau county and I'm looking for places to go too. I love snow wheeling but want to hit the beaches this summer. It seems though that you have to be fishing (which I love also) but there are no places to just 4 wheel and camp out on the beach anymore. When I was little I'd go out to captree with my dad to just ride around in his cj7. Long island sux now everywhere you go they just want your effing money. If you hear of anyplace please let me know.
Anyone hear about Rocs Trails opening up in or near Wurtsboro, NY? i think around april/may 2012. 90 acres is kinda small but its a start. Not alot of info yet but for a place a little closer than rausch it might be good for a daytrip that wont kill me on gas. Rocs Trails
im sorry if this isnt the right place for this but i need info on how to get onto the beaches in LI. I was about to purchase the Empire pass but then found out this only helps me with camping(which i do anyway so ill be buying) but wont help with beaches.
I love to fish and i would be using it to surf fish but how and where can i get more info on this?
FYI The spot that the OP posted about is NOT Legal... a lot of people go there, and it is a pretty sweet spot. However, I just heard from a buddy out there that last weekend 4 people got caught offroading there and had their trucks impounded. It cost one guy abt $1800 to get his truck back. So I don't think its worth taking the risk... granted, a lot people go there and get away with it, but I guess they're cracking down.
Drive it like you rented it, not like you stole it. Cus if you stole it, you'd be driving 5 mph below the speed limit and using your turn signals.
