It looks like you just have to make sure you have exterior mirrors just like the rest of us.

New York..........Consolidated Laws of New York Sorry can't link directly to the grit of the matter.
So follow this path, Clink on "Laws of New York" at bottom, then under Consolidated Laws click on "VAT Vehicle & Traffic", then "Title 3 - SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY, Article 9 - (375 - 383) EQUIPMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND MOTORCYCLES" has what you need to know. The Site also has a search form

why don't you call the local or state police just to make sure. i have seen a few threads about this same issue from different people from different states and no one seems to know for sure. you can skim through this thread and check out all of the different answers: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f97/door-or-no-doors-thats-my-question-16419.html. i think it is a good idea to call the police and see what they say since they are the guys giving the tickets.

A side view mirror is mandatory in NYS. Unfortunately third party information isn't always reliable or accurate. Please see the NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law Section 375 relating to required equipment below:

"10-a. It shall be unlawful after July first, nineteen hundred sixty-seven to operate on any public highway in this state any motor vehicle registered in this state, manufactured or assembled on or after such date, and designated as a nineteen hundred sixty-eight or later model, unless such vehicle is equipped with an adjustable side view mirror which shall be affixed to the left outside of such vehicle and which shall be adjustable so that the operator of such vehicle may have a clear view of the road and condition of traffic on the left side and to the rear of such vehicle"

The NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law and Traffic Regulations, which are lengthy and complex, are referred to often by law enforcement but it is impossible and unrealistic for Police Officers to remember every minor violation defined. Although some minor violations aren't actively enforced they become significant when coupled with other events.

To avoid trouble run a street legal vehicle when on public roadways and drive safely. Of course off road is another story!
