New to these forums. Just got my jeep after the new year. I really really want to update it to a tougher look (would love to take it on the beach) but here's my problem. I'm a mom of 2 young boys and this is my everyday mommy car. From what I read with some research I can't go higher than a 33" tire without having to raise the suspension. Not sure I'd even want to with what I need the car for? I want bigger tougher wheels, black matte rims, and various other little upgrades (gas cover, light cages etc...).
I know I sound like a total newbie because I don't even know the proper terminology But don't hate a mom for still wanting an awesome ride :happyyes:
Please tell me where on Long Island I can go for honest advice. I hate it when people take advantage
Hi Ali and welcome to the Jeep life! A couple of things. If you just want to take your Jeep on the beach, you can do it stock - just make sure you air down your tires (and assuming you have the proper beach permit and all the equipment that the permit requires).
You definitely will not need to "lift" (raise your suspension) to go on the beach. Anything bigger than a 33" tire will most likely require a lift. You can get 33s without a lift by either adding wheel spacers with your stock wheels or getting wheels with the proper "backspacing". Either one will offset your wheels and tires away from the areas on your Jeep where they will rub when turning or going over small bumps.
I do not know of anyone in Nassau (I'm in Suffolk) that sells wheels/tires, but you can get anything you want online. Discount Tire Direct is pretty popular on this forum and they're a vendor here so if you mention that you're a member you will get a pretty decent price (here's what I mean http://www.wranglerforum.com/f682/memorial-day-thank-you-sale-discount-tire-1255777.html). Matte black wheels should be pretty easy to find. If you have any other questions about sizes, etc., just post up here. Someone is always willing to help out. I ordered my wheels online and had them installed at Goodyear.
All the other little stuff is so easy to do yourself. There are tons of install instructions here and on the other forums. Youtube is also a great source. The gas cover should take you about 10 minutes and requires a screwdriver and a small hex key. Light cages should either pop in or require only a screwdriver. All this stuff can be found online and at your door in a day or two.
Hey guys! Thanks for your responses. Not sure how easy it will be for me Tony2x67 to install things myself....2 left thumbs... But always willing to try.
Thanks to both of you for the information! I very much appreciate it
Hi Alicat - if you're really not a hands-on person when it comes to altering your vehicle, there are may inexpensive things you can do cosmetically to your Jeep that don't require a lot of heavy modification / suspension work, etc. Jeeps are pretty modular and customizable - a lot of people change cosmetic items - wheel color (blacking out stock wheels using a $4 can of plastic-dip spray) or changing fuel doors, grab handles, light covers, side steps etc. Find things you like the look of - and search on here and you will find tons of how-to's and comments from forum members. Good luck with your Jeep!
I know this is a few weeks old and I am very knew here, have not even gotten my JKU as of yet... Anyway, I wanted to offer some advice to both Ali and Rob regarding what she is looking to have done. I have been a part of multiple car clubs over the last 20+ years. Rob, I know you have been trying to keep the Nassau Jeep Club going, why not have a gtg where people bring their new Mods with them and have a help a member install a Mod party? I have done lots of those in the past.
This would help Ali 100%, she can be shown how simple many of the "complicated" Mods are and you get a new member into your club! If I had my JKU I would offer up to help with this stuff, most of the basic stuff can be done with handtools in a parking lot without issue.
If you are just looking for advice then try some of the Jeep clubs on Facebook. There are local clubs such as Long Island Wrangler and Route 41 Jeeps. There is a wealth of knowledge there and always someone willing to give advice or lend a helping hand. I am relative newbie Jeep owner too and they have been a tremendous help to me.
there's a nice pair of 33" duratracs for sale on the Long Island Wrangler For Sale page. As far as shops go, John at Goonie's Garage is the man to talk to. https://www.facebook.com/gooniesgarage?fref=ts
