How bad is it if the cops catch you? Not that I'm thinking of doing anything I shouldn't😉.

The local cops don't care, but if the state park police catch you, you're f'ed.

Look into north jersey jeepers, hudson valley 4wd, or other such clubs if you want to find safe legal places to wheel. Def best to join a club, will save you a lot of bs in the long run. We wheel here at my place but it is small and not really local to jersey.

And it's def better to not mention places that aren't on a public forum.

Behind the Sheraton building a buddy of mine back in high school (5 years ago) had to sell his blazer to pay the fine. Apparently it's a bird sanctuary ...who knew?

Google maps will often show dec and park land as a shade of green, can help to keep you out of sensitive areas if you are thinking of going somewhere new. Works great on your phone if you have a signal to pinpoint your location...

Edit: a quick check of the area on google maps shows it be mixed, some dec some not. Best bet, find somebody who knows the area and where to/not to go.

the land behind the Sheraton and most trails in Mahwah are considered a Superfund site by the DEC. The old Ford plant dumped A LOT of paint sludge in the area in the 60's. It's a huge issue for the area and for the people who live there. HBO did a great documentary on the legal case called Mann Vs. Ford. I highly recommend it. You can google the area as well, lots of info.
