Hey all you Long Island folks know if it is legal to drive on any beaches on LI? I live upstate (poughkepsie/Newburgh)and have family in Patchogue/Medford, I'd like to tie in some beach driving with a visit to them in early spring. I read somewhere that you just have to carry a fishing pole and get a fishing license or something then you are allowed to drive on the beach? Any truth to this fellas?

There are two permits you can get- one is a fishing permit and one is a Suffolk County permit. Both will get you on the beach! However, Sandy really focked things up down here, and now Smith Point (prob the best beach wheeling spot) may be shut down since the barrier beach was breached (ocean connected to bay)

Kurtz has it right. Smiths point would be your closest beach to drive on from patchogue. I live I patchogue as well and have had the Suffolk outer beach permit for 3-4yrs now. This is the first year I'm worried about not being able to drive out. They sell daily passes and there's a camp site there as well. If things get Better and they open I'm hoping to plan a meet there this summer.

The state permit would be your best bet for available beaches to drive on, however there are strict time restrictions. It's also basically a fishing permit. You need poles for everyone in the vehicle and its strictly enforced.

If the army corp of engineers get their sh!t together smiths may open with limited access by Memorial Day.

Ok great thanks! You guys out there should setup a Beach Jeep Jamboree with camping that would be friggin awesome for the summer! We recently went to OBX and we fell in love with the Jeep driving down in Corolla. would be great to have something local for us Tri-Staters.

That's my game plan for the summer. Sandy may have postponed it for another year but I hope not. I spend a lot of time down in the OBX but never with my jeep. Been on the beach in Rams down there

The point for driving? Your talking about the north side of the point? As far as I know there was no damage

Gotchya. Well I posted in the jeep forum about the 25th. Looks like some of those members have been looking to do a meet so we might get a decent turn out

Anyone here definitely gonna come?

man, we should see if Smith Point needs volunteers to get that beach up and running again. Something I would gladly dedicate my time to doing.

That's actually a really good idea. I will make it a point to go down there before the 25th. It would be awesome to get a group together if it speeds up the opening date

Outlaw offroad is a local offroad forum but its very slow. I stopped posting because of the low activity.

Well, what are we waiting for, let's do the install! If not next weekend then it has to be the one after, or else I'm going to go lose my mind

Funny how yesterday morning I wasn't even thinking about lifting the Jeep, and now look what you've done!!!

I'll post up for sure when it gets a little closer but I'm thinking 8-9pm. Some people from Nassau want to come and they need time to get home from work and traffic to settle down
