Since you will be changing out your carriers – i.e., replacing with the truetracs, and the diff is being opened, I highly recommend re-gearing to the next lower gear ratio of 4.10. The 4.10 gears, 3spd auto and 33” tires will feel like you’re in the stock powerband ratio, which is perfect for all types of driving (street and off road). With the 4.10 gears, the Jeep accelerates well and is fairly quick despite weighing in at 4,200 lbs (from the winch and armor). At 55 mph, I believe I am running 2,400 rpms.
If you weren’t installing the truetracs and you just wanted to run 33” tires, I would just keep the 3.73 gears as they would be somewhat bearable on the road.
That's good to hear. I think when funding comes I will get the Truetracs too. I have 3.73 gears in mine with a 3spd auto. do you think doing a regear to the 4.10, would help out running 33s? Btw those pics are crazy! =] If I hadn't seen your jeep doing it, I wouldn't have thought a Daily Driver jeep could.
I was able to make it through without using my winch or without needing a strap/tow. I thought I would have to trick the truetracs by tapping on my brakes while moving forward but surprisingly - the truetracs made it through with no problems. Now I have been on off camber trails where I lifted my tires and the trail was difficult enough for the truetracs, that I had to use my winch to get unstuck. However, on the same trail – I’ve seen Jeeps with only one locker get stuck in the same exact place I did. Most of the dual locked Jeeps made it through, but a few did manage to get stuck as well. Because the truetrac is not a locker, it does have its fallacies, but for a Jeep that is used as a daily driver and goes on “mild” to “moderate” trails – it is the perfect traction solution in my opinion.
Thanks for replying. I think I saw a pic of your TJ on big rocks in a riverbed, if that was you, how well did it do? You say don't lift your tires often. If that does happen, 2 opposite tires off the ground, are you stuck for sure or will it still make it's way out? I am very happy with the dual truetracs. They perform well enough, that many people that I've wheeled with, think that I'm locked. They are quite surprised when I tell them that I'm not locked but just running limited slips. My Jeep is my daily driver and the truetracs are absolutely transparent on the streets and highways, there is no slop or jarring – symptoms usually associated with a locker. Jeep performs well in mud, snow (both on and off the road), loose gravel/terrain. As long as you DON'T lift your tires often or are on the rocks, the truetracs are decent. They are perhaps the best limited slip on the market. I had a shop do the install since I also regeared (3.07 to 4.10) my differentials at the same time. Total cost including labor for the regear and truetrac for both axles, was around $2.2k. This price also includes the purchase and installation of alloy axles for my dana35.
Hello, again I spoke with you in the past about your rig. I was wondering about the Detroit Truetrac LSD lockers and having them installed in both the front and rear, it seems like a good way to go. I remembered seeing a post somewhere that you said you had that set up. How well does it (your jeep) perform on the different surfaces, and are you happy with the set up? also did you do the install or did you have a shop do it, and at what cost? Thanks for your time.
