Did you ever find out the problem? My 92 YJ 2.5 is doing the same thing and has a new engine (4,000 miles) in it. I have not figured this out.

On and Off Tick, Valve train? Something else?
89 YJ 2.5 TBI, bone stock engine.

It seems to have developed an intermittent tick. It's quiet on start up but after driving for a while and coming back down to idle it seems to have an on and off tick? It will tick a few times then go silent for several seconds then tick again a couple fo time and then repeats. Soon as I come off Idle it's gone?

It is definately coming from the to of engine and sounds like to the rear.

Normally I would think it was a good old fashioned valve tick but why would it come and go and why disappear when above idle?
