Actually, the M151 is not a Willy's. It was first built by Ford and then by Kaiser, AM general and GM. It was the first vehicle I had a license for in the army. I loved it and thanks to my commander, we off-roaded it a lot. Here is a good link about it. Althought it was smaller than the hummer, I would take the MUTT any day on any battlefield.

|daddyjeep||What he said. The new JK Wranglers are even wider. This all started back in the 70's I believe when insurance companies were screaming that Jeeps rolled over too easy. They then made the "wide track" Jeeps and started putting in roll bars.|

Are Military jeeps as wide as the commercial Jeeps
I was telling my wife about my Jeeping experiences in the military.
The story turned to a time when I was on patrol with my trusty ol' Willys and this new-fangled Hum-something-dinger-HUMVEE tagged along. When I was driving the Willys M151 up a narrow mountain trail. The jeep was able to navigate the trail because it was narrow enough, but the Humvee was too wide and too heavy. Although the Jeep's 50 year old four cylinder did not have as much horsepower as the Hummer's brand new V8 Diesel, I was still able to slide into 4wd. I navigated the tight trail and was able to scoot up the side of hills where the Hummer was in danger of falling off the trail. Since I later transitioned to the Hummers, I am not bagging on Hummers. The Hummer has it's many strengths...but there are just some things you can only do with a Jeep...
The we were looking at a Jeep wrangler in the parking lot. Just from eyeballing it, it seems that the Wranglers that are sold in the commercial market to civilians are a bit wider. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Are the Willys jeeps narrower? Also, are the wheelbases shorter on the Willys than the Wranglers?
