To be perfectly honest I got mine pretty damn cheap, but at a thousand bucks I guarantee you that the 4:1 will be the most noticeable mod you will probably do to your rig if you wheel much.
I agree 100%
changed the T case....crawl like a snail & kept my highway gears

bigger tires will only make it go faster in 4low. you would need smaller tires to make it crawl slower...which is why you sometimes loose your top gear when going up in tire size. if you downsize you will crawl even slower...but you definitely don't wanna dowsnize anymore than those small 29's.

debruins and whats four squirell model?

debruins hmm you could deepen tour axle ratio to like 4.88 and get 32's that would give you a better ratio and bigger tires for more clearance,
or get a rubi
and if you want to go really slow i would suggest getting an auto rubi with 32's and the stock 4.10's with the auto you can get an ifinitly low gear ratio

nicolas-eric you can change the gears in the diff.
or install a 4:1 teralow kit in your TC.

AzTJ Keep it in 4-wheel low and in 1st-2nd gear... you can try and find an NP241(Rubicon Rock-Trac trasfercase) or go with a Tera-Low kit to get ya the 4:1 ratio. If you do step up the tires that might slow you down a bit but at what cost on the highways to the trails?

Question on gearing

OK, so have alot of experience in mudding. Now live in the Rockies, and have begun 4 wheelin here. Have a 99 Wrangler, 4squirrel model, with 29" tires, 4:10 rear, 5 speed.

Mountain trails are alot different, need the slow, granny gear, which mine doesn't seem to have for crawling over rocks, not blasting through mud holes....

So what is my best bet? If I go to a 31 or 32" tire, can I slow the Jeep down? Looking to be able to go slower over the rocks, when in 4 low.

If I go to the Rubicon model, should I get the auto or manual?
Seems like you could ride the brake in Low/Low.....

Know the Rubi has 4:1 transfer case where as mine is like 2.3???

Really would like to keep my 4 banger, as it is a cheap great vehicle, but how do I slow it down, or increase the revs while in low/low to crawl over the rocks instead of having to use the clutch????? It just seems to go too fast over the rocks, and especially going downhill.

Any advice????

Will definately need bigger tires/lift, as the moderate trails we've done, I'm still scraping the skid plate on the gas tank pretty good......

Thanks
