a cheapo code reader is like 30 bucks at harbor freight...good investment...
it will tell you the code and little else...
If you want to know more, you pay more...either way, with the direction cars are going, good investment.

|DevilDogDoc||Unless you live in the great state of California where the shop owners got together and had the state forbid parts houses from pulling codes for you for free. Something about taking food out of their kids mouths or something...|

|JDsDream||This system does not work on some 99's and 2000's. Take it to autozone or just about any auto parts store and they will pull the codes for free. They will even give you a print out of what it means. After you get the info, type the code number into google search. As mentioned above, read the posts related to Jeeps and Chrysler only.|

This on/off thing isnt working. No code on the odo. no flashing check engine lamp.
It doesn't seem possible to do this wrong.
Is there a special way of doing this?

yes this will work on your jeep. since it is a 2000 you shouldn't even have to to count the flashes of the light (my 02 just gives out the code on the digital odometer). In order to find out whatever your code means, just google OBD-II codes or check engine light codes and make sure you are looking at the codes for Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep
here's a link if you can't find it
Dodge - Chrysler - Jeep - Plymouth OBD-II Trouble Codes

My check engine light came on...
Check engine light came on at 145,252 miles on my 2000 4.0 TJ. Its running just fine as normal.
I found the info below in another TJ thread. Will that work on my 2000? Where can I find what the codes mean? The link below doesnt work.
here´s a manual how you can find out what´s wrong with your jeep.
read out the error code and you will know what´s wrong:
1) Turn the ignition key ON THREE TIMES in succession:
ON : OFF : ON : OFF : ON
(within FIVE seconds)
2) Count the number of times the check engine lamp on the dash flashes. The number of flashes represents the error code. There will be a short pause between the flashes representing the different digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual trouble codes.
3) Code 55 will be the last code to be displayed.
here is a list what all the error codes mean:
