87yj2.5 alot of people say just put your finger in the #1 spark plug hole and turn until your finger pops out is this reliable? and if so would it get the timing close enough to start it and take it to somone with a timing light?

stykthyn Find what factry spec is for tdc, remove #1 spark plug and turn engine over till you feel compression. Check your balancer. You should be pretty darn close o tdc on your timing marks. Roll it to where it needs to be and there you go.

87yj2.5 i got someone to look at it and they said it was the tensioner for the timing chain, anyone know how to find TDC?

sevenservices start with easy, check your battery for a hole in it.

Garyk Getting fuel, spark? If you heard a bang, sounds like something let go. Do a compression check.

timing/ignition issue?

so i was driving home the other night in my yj and i heard something that sounded like a big rock bouncing up and hitting the suspension so i turn it off and check it out and dont find anything wrong, i try to start it and it has trouble so i just give it gas and it cranks and drives home. the idle was normally between 1k and 1,500 after that it was in the low 500 and sounded like it was misfiring, i went for a drive and it started fine but the idle made it stall and i couldnt start it with the key so i roll started it and got it home now it wont start at all even with the roll start, i think its the ignition coil or timing is off what do you think?
