skeeter That's an excellent SWR, you can't get 1:1 across all channels with a fiberglass antenna, they don't have the bandwidth.

JCS05Rubi Ok skeet, thanks to you I think I got it all working as good as it gets I am recieving transmissions from farther away then I was expecting, and once I got the RF and squealche tuned in correctly, I could deal with the static. I am still getting some small feedback that sounds like a ricer burner in my speaker, but its much much quietier than when I ran a battery ground.

I tried your "Break one nine for a radio check" trick about 1/4 mile from the truck stop before I tuned my radio, and got "Checks in the mail, sounds better than mine!" That made me pretty happy.

No one around here does any antenna tunings, even the truck stop guys and CB radio store guys didn't know anyone that did, so I just bought a 50 dollar meter at radio shack. I tuned it to get 1.2 on channel 1, 1 on 20, and 1.2 on 40. Is that good enough, or should I try and tune it to 1.05/1.1 on all channels?

Anything else I should know before I go have fun?

Ok, if this is on your 05 then there are a couple power leads behind the glove box that work good. I ran amy's power to that and her ground to one of the studs that hold the dash to the body. We get no ignition or alternator interference.

Can you describe the static? does it increase and decrease as you rev the engine or drive? are you parked under power lines?

There will be static, it's supposed to be there, you have a couple noise blocker circuits on your radio which will reduce it somewhat but at the cost of receiving weak signals. those are the ANL and NB switches.
The primary way to deal with static is your squelch knob, you turn that till the static disappears. What it does is set the signal threshold required open the audio circuit. In other words it blocks sound until you receive a strong signal.

I don't know if the TA there has a radio shop, if they do it's quite likely they would be open on sunday. Truckers are very bored on the weekends, thats when they'll spend money on anything.
Anybody can give a radio check, it's not something you buy at the shop.
A radio check is just a request for an audio report. You call "break one nine for a radio check" and then (hopefully) you'll get a response of "checks in the mail" or "sounds good" if you're coming in clear.

JCS05Rubi I am going to re-wire the Jeep before I call for a radio check. Right now, my power/ground wires are about ~7 feet long and are ran right next to each other. My coax then meets the power/ground wires at the drivers side peddles, and follows them over to the passenger seat. This was just temporary until I can find a mount for my radio, but I bet the wiring is causing the interference. I am noticing that this is very similar to a high end radio install. I am gonna run the coax back under the rear seat ,and up the passenger side instead of driver, and find someway to cut down my ground and eliminate it from following the power wire. skeeter Take a drive down to the truck stop and call for a radio check.
3 or 4 nautical? miles may be beyond the limit of your setup right now especially if your parked with the front facing away from the highway.
With your antenna mounted on the back it's using the body of your rig as a ground plane and thus directing your signal forward.

JCS05Rubi Ok, I just "bleeped" the microphone one time and the radio like..came alive! lol.. radio itself has static, external speaker has static.

I got some noise on a couple random channels, but nothing audibile with the nasty whine I was getting, so I changed my ground to the hood ground strap instead of the battery. Now I can understand some of the guys, but not very many. I would say about 10% is audible, and even that is behind huge static. I even hit an interstate to see if it was better, and its not. I am only about 3-4 nautical miles from the interstate. Theres still a pretty large amount of static, no matter what I do with the dials. Any ideas? Obviously I need to have the antenna tuned, but just be messing with it a tiny bit, I don't see a huge difference in tuning the antenna. When I touch it, and use my body as an antenna, the thing sounds like an FM radio though Any suggestions appreciated, and thanks Skeeter and WhiteYJ for getting this thing running atleast

skeeter It's not working.
Turn off noise blocker and ANL.
Turn your RF gain all the way up and turn your squelch all the way down, if you don't hear static it's not working. Quit using the external speaker until you know if the radio itself has audio.

JCS05Rubi Disconnected the ring terminal, and rubber-banded it back to the antenna. Still no sound. I took the Jeep to a local Route that is usually littered with trucks. No noise at all after driving about 20 miles. to be fair, I didn't see any 18 wheelers, but I was still expecting to hear SOMETHING. When I got back near a city, I saw the meter on the left of the radio moving near the middle of the gauge, but no noise was heard. Again, the speaker works in PA mode, but I hear nothing in "external Speaker" mode, but nothing when listening through the channels.

Is there an easy way to test if its recieving, without having a hand held CB around? I want to make sure its working before I hide the wires and mount up the radio.

skeeter I just looked at Wilsons site. If you have that little wire at the bottom of the antenna hooked to ground unhook it.

It is NOT a "ground wire" to increase the ground of the antenna, although using the lead does make the antenna DC ground. It is used when you are not able to get below a 2.0:1 SWR even after tuning. This generally indicates a mismatch of impedance between the coax and the antenna. This can be caused by poor ground but is generally attributed to the mounting location. It re-inserts 25 ohms impedance at the antenna feed point and brings the system back to the 50 ohms required. It is not a tunable device, therefore it is not fooling the radio into thinking the system is matched. It is actually matching the antenna and feed point to the required 50 ohms impedance for the coaxial cable. The most often time it will be used is when the antenna is mounted on the top of tool box in the bed of a pick-up, or on the passenger side of a tractor using co-phased antennas.

skeeter That plastic washer is supposed to be there, don't remove it.
The mast sticking up needs to be insulated from the counterpoise(body of your Jeep)
What is the wire that looks like it's coming from your antenna down behind the mount?

Help #2- No sound in any channel

Ok, I got the antenna mount and everything all figured out. Now, I have power to the radio, and my external speaker works in PA mode, but I have no sound on any channel in CB mode when the speaker is hooked into the "External Speaker" port.

I have my power/ground wires going to the CB coming directly off the battery, running through the firewall grommet. My antenna coax is Mini-8, running through the taillight grommet, into the cab on the drivers side.

my antenna is mounted on a teraflex mount, with an "antenna stud" from TA. the ground to the antenna, is sandwiched in between the teraflex mount, and the jeep tub, with the ring terminal around the stud that is bolted through the Jeep body.

the antenna stud goes, from bottom up, Mini-8, antenna stud, Lock washer, teraflex mount, PLASTIC WASHER, antenna. This plastic washer came with the antenna stud kit, could that be my issue?

I could just not be close enough to any highways or anything, but I want to make sure before I put everything back together.
