You have likely been running oil with additives that prevent sludge. You have a 2004, not a 1984. The two problems with switching to synthetic are caused by the new oil breaking down and dislodging the gunk that accumulates when using older oils. The gunk can cause problems directly (blockages or carry debris) or the the synthetic would leak through a joint because the gunk is no longer providing a seal. You should be fine.

I run Amsoil full synthetic in my vehicles for 22.5k miles, changing the filter at 7500 mile intervals. Run it in my dirt bikes too. With a premium membership the oil and filters are affordable. With the right drain intervals your maintenance costs will come down even with the high price of the oil.

nimbo So since I have a 4.0L straight 6 I should just stick with the conventional oil

He has the 4L TJ straight 6 (I6) and the treatment is a little different than the 3.8L V6--

By the way I use Mobile one 5w-30 and I'm at 4200 ft altitude (NorNv) NO LEAKS and she doesn't burn any oil , but I've been using syn since 1000 miles and now the mileage is 11,000 miles !!

Why no synthetic after 65,000?
And did you mean v6 or i6 for that, or both?

I thought synthetic was always better!!

JIMBOX I hope we aren't forgetting that the ops talking about a 4L TJ motor and the JK forum relates to 3.8L V6s--

There's nothing wrong with the synthetic, but I wouldn't recommendit after 65,000 miles-

Ask the question in the TJ forum, you'll get some closer related info !!

Is 10w30 too thick? I know growing up that is what we ran in our trucks and bigger vehicles with the bigger engines that took a beating, not sure if I need that in the jeep or is it overkill?

millfire517 Conventional oil says 5w20, but running synthetic and with some other peoples advice I stepped up to 5w30 especially since we are heading into summer. But use what you feel comfortable with.

moscoeb 5w30 or 10w30? I never know what to get!! Benefits or detriments of each?
I understand the difference in the weights, kinda, not the technical crap, but that they are different and such.

Just some thoughts and opinions.

nimbo Ok thanks guy I appreciate the info n will definitely b going over to synthetic now that I know its cool m wont harm my Jeep....... that thing is great n I love it so I wanna keep it running good n strong thanks aging

Wandell There are a lot of old wise tales about oil. Don't use syn. during break in, switching to syn. after extended miles will cause oil leaks, etc. I plan on putting Mobil 1 5w20 in our new JK at the first oil change.

thenorsepole I am at 6800 miles on my 2011, just completed the last oil change with conventional. The stealership recommended going to synthetic after the break in period at 10,000 miles.
I just changed mine with Mobil Super 5000 5W-20 and K&N filter (the wife doesn't understand why I did it myself for $30 when the dealer would have done it for $20).
I'll be going Royal Purple Synthetic at 10,000 miles as well as change the diff fluid. If I'm going to change the diff fluid, might as well get the ABS diff armor front and back eh?

Peepers I just did my first oil change after switching to synthetic. at 123k on my 98. oil came out a lot cleaner than I was expecting but I haven't seen any leaks yet since doing it. 126k now with fresh oil and running strong.

I've been using the NAPA brand synthetic 10w30

C.L. I think they're worried about the synthetic washing out deposits built up for extended use of conventional. 65,000 shouldn't be long enough for any really nasty buildups to have accrued. If peace of mind is more important than $30 to you, you could change it again 500-1000 miles after the swap to dump any crud the synthetic has pulled off the internals.

I wouldn't worry about it though.

i have a 2004 rubicon and its almost time for its oil change i have just over 65,000 miles on it and was thinking about switching from conventional oil to synthetic oil ive been told that jeep dosent recommend doing this is it ok to make the switch or should i keep the conventional oil in it??
