herbie sounds like the reverse light circuit is grounded or controling a relay thats grounded also check that circuit for a proper fuse

reverse lights cause voltage drop.

i have a 95 wrangler yj and the owner i got it from put in some rear led tail lights. when i put my jeep in reverse the alternator gauge goes from about 13.5 v to about 10 v and causes my jeep to start idling really rough until i take it out of reverse. the reverse light dont even come on when i put it in reverse. i found the blinker.tail, and running light wires that come back into a 4 flat and connect to my lights but i dont know which wire is for the reverse lights and why it would be shorting out my alternator. any ideas?
