neverfastenough1 Picture a stinger on a bee. It looks like the one on the yellow rig in the aforementioned picture ^ at the top of the page. Thats where it gets its name. The light bar, hoop, or bull bar, is just there to either hold lights or to protect the grill, or winch.

6InARowMakesItGo ahh ok i know what a stinger is but i understand the distinction now. a light bar is just a weak stinger that is not strong enough to do anything.

ditto on the smittybilts being junk. i've seen one bend from a 215 lb guy standing on it. not on the end of the light bar just on the back bumper trying to get his hard top off.

A stinger would be incorporated into the bumper and stout enough to hold the weight of the jeep. A stinger in the true sense is to stop the jeep from rolling over forward should it nose over.
What i have and what looks like is pictured is just a light hoop. It cant hold up to a whole lot. But its main function is just a place to mount lights.

99% of the stingers you see (like the smittybilts) are just for that hardcore look and would fold into the hood of the Jeep if they ever got used as intended. Or in the case of the of the smittybilt, used as not intended.

6InARowMakesItGo i assume you mean the 5th from the left. that thing the lights are on is called a stinger. it's separate from the bumper a lot of times. the bumper is just there and the stinger mounts to it. you can usually but them separately. and make any stinger fit any bumper with some modification. many bumpers come with winch mounting spots cut out of it.
