TXHillCountryTJ Where I installed my LED, there is a hole in the metal (covered by the plastic fender material, that is about 3/4" or so in diameter. Drill a hole through the plastic in that location and you won't need to cut through any metal.
Pop the light in, the included grommet will help hold the light in place.

I used the same exact 3/4" LED lights that were posted above your post. Just using a 3/4" hole saw attached to your drill, you can make the hole to pop the light into. I am sure others will have different methods, but for me a hole saw is the easiest.

918redtj How did you guys mount the side marker lights under the fenders? What kind of tools did you use to drill the hole? I just cut mine yesterday and can't figure out how to get a light mounted under the fenders. Thanks!

TXHillCountryTJ Hey all, I appreciate all of the info from this thread. With it I did mine the other day. Here are the results. The LED turn signal I used is set up for 12 volt so there is no issues with the flasher.
In my '01 there is a hole in the sheet metal just behind the flare and these fit perfectly after I drilled a 3/4" inch hole in the flare.

coolhand My front is still just trimmed then I've added on the back, so I don't get hassled by authorities that like to hassle lifted Jeeps, so I'm told?, for the still flat look on back will do front soon, going for praticality not looks, old school I guess.

wranglertj2001 this looks awesome! i didnt like the price of new flat fenders either and personally i think this look better than some of them even! plus you keep your front turn signals too.

Kevin063 I'm definitely picking up some of the 6" stock style fender flares and see if I can chop them up like this. I'd like them to be a little wider than they would be cutting my stock ones. Everyone's looks great, I'm super excited for my next little project!!

Can't remember exactly. It was a while ago. 1"-1.5" maybe. It did make a difference. I used to rub the flares just a little bit before it hit the bumpstops. That little bit of trimming was just enough.
I'm still running the stock trimmed rears with my flat fenders. The remaining lip is about the same as the MCE Flattys.

How much approx. did you take off. Looks to me, if you take just a little off it makes a nice difference.

RMSpiel I did this mod on my 97 auto 4.0 when I owned it (sold to a friend and now I have a 99 manual 4.0)
I used a dremel to cut mine and it took probably around 20 min.
putting that edging on took the longest, needed a flat head to help spread it open to get onto the fenders
I did end up bedlining them but its not in this picture (33's on a stock suspension)

prjeeper I just did this. Awesome, cheap as thing to do!!!

Two things to add.

1. Using a box knife, the higher the temp of the plastic the better. Do it on a hot day. It will cut like butter. I noticed a substantial difference in ease of cutting between even the sunny and shady side. IMO anything but a box knife would be overkill for this task.

2. Easiest to cut them mounted on the vehicle. I had my rear ones off for something semi unrelated and cut them while not mounted. It was a bit of a pain.

Thanks....Yes they are in the stock locations...I tried to take them off to make the cut and the bolts are stuck...I can get a little lazy with stuck bolts so I just turned them sideways to make the cut then turned them back straight.

mudboy71 Update...I work nights so I stay up all night when I am off....sooooo....got bored and went back out and trimmed up the fenders.....looks pretty good so far....I will post pics tomorrow....gotta take another shower now.......lol

Cutting fenders

I pulled my flares today to paint them to get me by until I could afford some Poison Spyder Defenders....Anyway, after I got them off, I kinda liked the way my fenders looked without the flares.....I would say from the pics I have seen of the Defender Fenders, that the stocks without the flares give me about the same clearance or at least they will with a little trimming.....Went to Oreiily and bought 3/4" LED markes lights and mounted them then scribed my cut lines.....Haven't made the cuts yet...Wasn't comfortable doing it with a sawzall.....Gonna get a cutoff wheel tomorrow and have at it....I did go crazy with the sawzall on my front bumper.....lol.....Hope Yall Like.

Sblanck I used an ordinary box cutter. Did mine Saturday while it was 100 degrees and it was like cutting butter.

I used my sawzall with a metal blade. It's all I had. Other people have used dremmels and other things. But mine turned out great. Glad I did it !
