Advise on transfer case

The entire rear housing is covered in some sealer bc of a crack or leak (it's how I bought the Jeep). I want to fix this case bc the front axle doesn't engage, I've been told of a few easy fixes to get it working properly but I would rather put in a new one instead.

A guy is selling an NP231 C from a 6 cyl Chevy Blazer. I have read somewhere that I can swap the front housing and what not but don't want to jump the gun and be stuck with a bunch of scrap metal. The guy says he'll hold it for me til I find out. Oh, it's only $100, that's why I wanted to buy his.

Lead me to the truth, I trust in your Jeep wisdom.
