Almost sounds like you left it dry too long before removing the tape.
What happens is it's dry on top and still soft underneath. So when you peel the tape it's bridged across the gap and pulls up with the tape as the bottom hasn't cured and bitten into the plastic yet.
When I did our tub, I let it flash off for about 5 minutes and then pulled the tape.
By the time I was done it was almost to the point that it was going to do what you experienced.
Also the heavier you put it on the worse it will be, the longer you wait. I did 3 or 4 light coats on ours and not a problem.

Duplicolor bed coating unmasking
I decided to do my fender flares today with the spray on duplicolor bed liner. I've used this stuff before and had good luck with it. Not today though
I've used it to cover all sorts of stuff, but never had to mask anything. I did my flares without taking them off, I masked them really well instead. Well, when I started removing the tape, it peeled some of the bed liner off
I redid that flare and on the next one, used a razor blade to cut at the tape line. I'm still pretty disappointed in the results. I know, I should have removed them, and I will later. Only now I'll have to use a wire brush on a drill to remove the line already on there.
Anyone else have trouble getting this stuff to stick? I cleaned the flares, used a scotch bright pad to scuff them up, then wiped them down with xylol.
Any ideas or suggestions?
