Anything you guys can tell me what you like/dislike about your wrangler unlimited would be appreciated.

One more concern was cargo space. Does the back seat fold/tumble, as they do in the tj? I'm really pushing for them to go with a wrangler over a crossover

Thanks everyone
I agree with what everyone else here has posted. To your dad about side protection, you can always add body armor and rock sliders to beef up the sides if you want. It won't make the JKU bullet proof during a side impact, but it will definitely add extra protection to slow down whatever hit the Jeep. I added Poison Spyder Brawler Rockers on the sides of my Jeep and I'm in the process of bolting up a sports cage to beef up the stock roll bars. They are great for offroad protection and I feel comfortable that the steel will deflect or at least help reduce the damage done during a side impact or rollover.

rics1997 I would say it is pretty safe just in the fact the insurance on them is very low. the Insurance companies obviously think they are pretty safe.

I just sold my 97 TJ for a 2012 JKU Sport. I was sad to let go of my TJ, but now that I have the new one, I love it. I was surprised at how refined it felt, not at all like the utilitarianism of the TJ (which I loved). I got mine with a soft top because IMHO it makes the unlimiteds look more Jeepy and I'm amazed at how quiet it is inside after driving my TJ for 12 years.

The rear seats fold down, but don't tumble like the TJ, at least on the unlimited. They have a 60/40 split which provides a ton of extra space.

Mine can stock with 31s and you can get 33s under there without a lift (might need spacers but not sure).

I'm really happy with my JKU as a DD. It is much more comfortable and solid feeling then my TJ and is still a Wrangler through and through. I think I made a good decision, but you and your folks will have to make the best decision for yourselves.

Good luck!

jcf I am a middle aged female & have a JK. It's an '07 & I love it, I think your Mum should be able to judge if she will like it or not if she test drives one. If she wanted to modify it, there is so much you can do with one & they are very comfortable to ride in.
I guess a lot is just matter of opinion.
Oh yeah' mine has never leaked....ever so it's not that way with them all

What are there other choices? If they are looking at something like a Liberty/Grand Cherokee/Ford Escape type vehicle, then continue to steer towards the JKU. But if they are looking at a Volvo XC60 or Audi Q5 type......there is no comparison.

I would personally steer anyone who is not a under 40, outdoors type, away from a Wrangler. If they are not going to use it as a Jeep, ie top and doors off, then it is a pi$$ poor suv due to fuel economy, quality, ride/drive, leaks from the top, etc. But if they will use it and enjoy it.....there is no substitute!!!!

kjeeper10 I drove a Tj for 10 years. The Jk is more defined, more practical for DD. I loved the simplicity of the Tj but the Jk def is a better vehicle. Mine Is an 07, a lot has changed since with the 12 but it's still a Jk.
Safety wise the Jk blows the Tj away. More safety features are now In all newer vehicles. The ECU controls the throttle in turn controls all the electronic safety features like ESP/BLD--its crazy. Space wise--on paper the Jk is not much bigger but it seems like there is. The rear seat does fold and is removable. It still rides like a jeep though because of the solid axles.
I'd say go for it. I did and have not looked back. Just be prepared to take heat from the diehard Tj guys

Edit- your looking into a JKU

I tried lol

Gryde717 I'm 26 with a jku and love it. The backseats fold down like a grand Cherokee would so everything is flat to the drivers seat. Only negative is there is a gap at the bottom of the back seats but I've had no issues.

No mods to mine yet but I hear a budget boost 2" lift can get you Clarence for 35" tires with nothing else needed and 33's should clear w stock.

I love mine and have no complaints after two months.
