As was posted above IMO the tires are the real answer to this question. All season tires on an AWD vehicle is great but the correct rubber will make for an excellent outcome bar none. I had a BMW 530 that sucked in any snow (RWD) with the summer performance tires and when the snows (Michelin Alpin I think) where installed, made the grip way better. I am awaiting the first winter with our JKU but I am expecting no issues as the stock tires are very soft.
I have already had 2 full lockups during braking with the idiots not being able to see our bright yellow Jeep. Neither time did the tires howl during hard braking, so one can suspect I have 2 sets of flat spots now.
For the OP I rationed out the costs of the tires as "less" than the cost to repair any impact with another vehicle. Never been stuck and don't plan on it either.

Ignoring driver skill (i.e., just comparing vehicle capabilities) isn't this really a TIRE QUESTION as far as basic winter weather driving is concerned?
I'd expect a set of Blizzaks on a good AWD system would "outperform" the stock Rubicon in 3" or less of snow. On the other hand, that's sort of irrelevant given that either ought to be able to handle 3" of snow without any problem so long as they're carefully driven.
Now, if you're talking 12" of snow, then the Rubi (or any Wrangler) would be much better off.
I will say that one advantage the Wrangler does have is the ability to comfortable drive partially on the shoulder. Particularly when ice under snow is a problem, it's nice to be able to pull the Wrangler over to the side of the road and get some traction on the snow covered grass that you can't on the slick roadway. (Provided of course that conditions allow you to do this safely.)

The best thing for a Georgia "snow storm" is experience. All the fancy wizbangs like 4/AWD, traction control, ABS, yadda yadda yadda will do you no good if you have no idea how to use them in snow. The best vehicle for 2-3" of snow is in your area is a FWD car with snow tires.

|CrazyBull||Out of curiosity and as I'm from Texas..(I hate black ice), and now in Utah, how come no one address's the use of ice cleats or grips. Granted studded tires aren't legal in some states but there are aftermarket options that are not snow chains.|

|Riggsie||I live in Snokane Wa where we get our share of snow. Remember the Rubi also has traction control and anti-lock brakes. Those two features alone should be enough for normal winter driving. If it gets deep, and it does in Spokane, then pull back the handle and put it in four wheel drive. The Rubi will out perform the Lexus once the snow gets deep. As far as day to day winter driving they should both do well, both have traction control and anti-locks. None of which will help you stop any faster! Slow down and enjoy the snow!|

Have an old jeep and love it, and a lexus GX '08. It is CLEARLY not as fun. Couple of points.
Facts: Do allot of reasurch, especially safety and reliability. I hope you are not about to trade in one of the most competant and reliable all round off roaders in recent times. The Lexus is permanent all wheel drive with locking center diff. The Wrangler has part time, and if a Rubi , a free axle in the back when not in lo. It is not advised to put the jeep in four wheel drive on the roads in wet weather for extended periods due to wear and tear. The rubi locking diff is only in 4 lo, not usefull on the street.
The four wheel drive system is made for use every day in the LX and is the same at the Toyota Prado in Africa and Austrailia. There is simply a reason why these vehicles are so popular in these remote areas.
Conclusion: If you are doing dedicated four wheeling and going to keep the LX and buy another vehicle, I would get the Jeep and have more fun than you could imagine. Otherwise, keep the GX and get dedicated snow tires.

|sneck||Too be fair, if you're wife couldn't figure out how to drive home in the snow in Georgia, I don't think the vehicle is what will matter much with her on the road. Most people would prolly agree awd is better for road driving. wranglers are setup for offroad; unless she has to travel through foot+ deep snow across rocky terrain to get home, the awd or even full time 4wd will feel better. next time, tell her to stay home|

I think it a questions of who is driving. 4wd is only really necessary for snow in a few instances, IE when the snow is so deep you getting hung up on axles / underbody or parallel parking in snow that has been piled up by snow plows. anything else can be handled in 2wd.
I grew up and went to school in the northeast, and have been driving in snow since licenced, i now live in Virginia and am amazed by what i have seen down here in the snow. contrary to what some people believe Having a 4wd vehicle does not allow you brake any harder take turns any faste in snow/ice, just a bit more traction when accelerating and cruising.

|Vince1||My wife had the Landcruiser similar to your rig. No comparison, it was much better in snow compared to the JKU, mainly due to heavier weight. The key though, is the tires. She had a set of Blizzaks on it and it could go anywhere. Had the ability to control locking differentials which was awesom.|

Plus you have the ability to lift and put bigger tires on or keep it completely stock and it'll outperform any other vehicle on the market

Better in snow/ice, Lexus GX470 or Rubicon??
I have a question for those who know more about wrangler's than I, which is probably most everyone out there! I've been seeing quite a few posts lately about snow and jeep performance in the last week or so, as the weather is starting to cool off. I usually don't see much in GA but a few days a year we get snow and ice. My question is, do you think my JKU-R will perform better in the snow/ice than my Lexus GX470? The reason I ask, is that my wife drove the Lexus last year during a snow/ice storm and was scared to death, couldn't make it home, etc etc. It's AWD and has 4wd high and low. She doesn't know how to use 4lo. She was actually "saved" by a gentleman that drove up in a wrangler and offered to help her. Our 3 month old baby was in the vehicle with her at the time and they were both hysterical. She said it was literally like an angel was sent to help her because they were helpless out there.
Anyway, back to the question, do you think one of the vehicles would perform better than the other in snow and ice and would it even be much of a difference? I would think there would be some pros and cons of each of them in snow and ice but just wanted to get some other opinions as winter is approaching.
