KicknJeep CRJ hit it on the head most radar units are not stationary and are moving most likely you will be tagged before the radar detects them Just keep with the flow as everyone has said and you should be fine, Oh and have a safe trip are you taking I-40 if so you'll pass through our county in mid Tenn.

crj101 Save your money to pay your fines! We don't sit on the side of the road with the radar running, it's on standby and a detector won't warn you before you have been clocked. Be safe and have fun.

98TJ What needs to be made is a civilian computer program that would locate cops using their dispatching program and put them on a gps map. Then you would just slow down when you get close. Don't say it's impossible because the military has it.

Dare2BSquare If I was a cop... You have a radar detector, I assume you WANT to break the law. I will give you the maximum ticket I can!!!

03wrangler i have a cobra in my jeep. the really cool thing is that since most of the lights in downtown indy have the same sensors that it picks up i know when the light is about to change. but i would have to agree with everyone sometimes they work for you and sometimes they dont.

foxinthemudd I had one for my other rigs since I could drive. saved my butt more than enough times to pay for itself over and over again. but I do agree with RIP and SNYPR, they don't work that well ALL the time and give you a false sense of security. For the jeep though I really don't have to worry about speeding too much, so I just gave it to my dad. I liked my cobra but if I got another I would get a passport with a laser detector, I've heard great things about them.

then again I learned after my first hard copy of 84 in a 55, when I was 16. Your best bet is just use the money for a aftermarket cruise control, and don't speed.

I love my TJ, but there is no freakin way I'm driving the wife and 3 kids from Central Texas to mid way down Florida in the manual transmission Jeep.

And my experience has shown that the TJ is happiest at under 3 MPH!

TeeJay Escort passport SR-7.

I had one in my Del Sol.
It's very effective because the sensors mount to the bumpers and the readout is mounted under dash. Places like Virginia and Canada (where these are not legal) have a harder time seeing it and are therefor less likely to take it.

As said above though, radar detectors are only effective in situations where you shouldn't be speeding at all anyway. If you are the only car on the road police will know you are the one speeding. If there are enough other cars on the road that they won't know who they radard you shouldn't be speeding.

All that aside; Is this for the Jeep? My experience is that Jeeps are happiest at 65mph anyway. Save yourself the money, don't speed and you won't have a problem.

***shameless plug****
Wear your seatbelt too!

squarelightsahara I drive to Orlando every March. Just stick with the traffic and you will be fine. I know it flows about 85 mph through Atlanta at 2 A.M. Detectors are a false sense of security.

JCS05Rubi Valentine was top dog for awhile. now the passport and the escort are quickly taking reign of that spot. As stated though, these detectors only detect when the radar is used. the newer ones will detect when its used miles away, so you sometimes have a chance, but not all the time. Especially if its late at night, and your the only one around

sgnellett Best out there for the money is the Valentine, but keep in mind, they only help you if it lets you know someone else is being clocked, by the time he points it at you, he's got you! So with or without, don't be the rabbit, hang back a car or 2, let some pinhead in a Vette take the lead, then he gets to pay the excess road tax! You can make good time and not get a ticket, if you are smart about it!

Also, keep in mind that Florida runs lot's of unmarked cars (usually mustangs & camaros), and they pace from the air, all kinds of crap, so once you hit the state line, just keep with the flow, you'll be good!

MoA cobra makes some nice ones.. my last 2 have been from them.. except stay away from the voice ones because the voice box goes out in them in a little over a year.. especially in a jeep with the top off.. my first one was stolen out of my jeep =/

once i had a cop try and take mine from me.. i told him to lick my nuts because i knew for a fact they are legal in indiana.. because why would they sell them if they arent? it was when i was 16 so he coulda just been trying to get him a nice radar detector.. it was funny because i was getting out of my jeep at the courthouse to go drop some papers off when he ran up to my window demanding me to turn it over to him lol i just laughed and shut my door and locked it and walked away

try to get one with a laser.. it picks up more cops than regular ones..

Watching the road closely is the best cop detector in the world . . . and it will keep you out of crashes, too. Go figure.

Good luck on your trip. PS - the only hard copy I ever got was in Denton, Texas while I was down there at a sniper school. Damned motors.
Only ticket I ever got was from a motor too. And I was on my bike at the time.

RIPBiker13 This is the FACT of radar detectors. They go off when they get hit by radar. By that time the cop has all the info he needs to give you the ticket. They are worthless. Yes they work, but it doesn't matter. I was a cop, trust me. Do the speed limit and you won't have to worry.

distortedtj got me I do the speed limit so i dont have to worry about getting a ticket. Be safe on your trip

Radar Detector?

Gonna be taking a trip soon (taking the family to Disney in FL for Christmas ) and am thinking of picking up a radar detector.

Problem is that I've not looked at them for many years...

Any opinions on what is the best out there?

Second question: any idea on the legality of detectors in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida?
