|geiman||It's possible yes, but it is a good bit of work. I know of two guys from our club who have done it but end up with leaks a short while later (not as bad, but still leaking), but I've also read of others who have successfully done it. If you're game I'd say go for it but keep in mind it may not permanently fix your leak.|

anyone reseal steering gear box
was looking into replacing my leaking stearing gear box on my 97 TJ when I saw a re-sealing kit of $12.00 - any one ever do this - is it possible to fix a leaking box..

|HarryJeepGuy||On your steering box problem, the real challenge there is going to be getting the pitman arm off. Especially on a 97. I'd recommend just buying a new pitman arm with the new box and save yourself from hating your Jeep before you can enjoy it. If you plan on running 35" tires in the future, now would be the time to upgrade to the Durango steering box. Run a search on here for the best places to get either, and what year Durango box will fit if you want it.|

|Jerry Bransford||Replace that bad OE Spicer 5-297x u-joint with a Spicer 5-760x. The 5-760x is the newer, stronger, and more durable replacement that is a nice upgrade to the 5-297x.|

|HarryJeepGuy||36mm on the unit bearing nut. If the trick with using the steering to help get the hub off doesn't work, spray some penetrating oil on it and smack it with a BFH.|

|4Jeepn||The hardest part will be getting the unit hub out. You will need a 12 point 13mm socket or wrench for the 3 bolts on the hub. A 32mm(I think thats right) for the hub nut itself. To get the hub out use a long socket placed on end of the shaft yoke and the other resting on the wall just to the side of the axle tube. Then use your steering wheel to apply pressure to force the hub out as you turn the wheel. Not a big deal, but can be a pain the first time you do it. I would also change out the other shafts u-joint sooner than later. Before you put it all back together apply a coating of antisieze on all the bolts. and the hub surface.|

|jakes99||Front axle ujoint is about 12 bucks. Helps to loosen the lugs and axle hub nut before you Jack it up if you can. Rest is easy if you have a vise..I need a steering gear too.|

|scgeek12||you can pull the shaft out and replace the joint, just had mine done at a local driveshaft shop and i watched them do it (had no ride to go anywhere else lol) looked pretty easy actually but they only charged me $150 and put spicer joints in so i was happy, not sure on the steering box havent done one in a jeep yet|

bought a TJ today - frt ujoint question
bit the bullet and took a chance- Prayed they laid the money down for a 1997 TJ. was exactly what I wanted
4 Cyl 0 yeah i know but its good for me
2 inch lift
black wheels 30x15in tires
165000 miles yikes but she runs sweet and tight.
ANYWAY I need to repair 2 things
#1 steering gear box is leaking badly so I will change it - easy job but any good places to get one ?
#2 BIG question - the driver side frt u joint is toast. Now do I pull that shaft and replace the joint alone or do I have to replace the shaft and joint as a unit ?
