freeskier Go check out the JB conversions website. They have case halves fairly cheap.

They have everything you could possibly need.

I believe the manuals do but the automatics don't; at least mine didn't. It has the 23 spline input shaft just like the 6 cylinder models. Keep in mind you also need to worry not only the spline count but the input shaft length. You can find varying information online about what the length/spline should be for certain t-cases, but I've found it can vary quite a bit. The best way to be sure is to find out exactly what spline count/shaft length you have and find something that matches up exactly. Or you can take the case apart and swap input shafts.

Some more somewhat useful information:

distortedtj All the tag is for is the model and ratio. type of t-case
272... is the internal ratio.
There is probally 20 or so versions of a NP231 t-case. They are used in Jeep chevy and dodges. but the housings and input/outputs are different.
The cherokee's tail shaft is slightly different from your TJ's. But CAN still be used with a little know how and modding.
The spline count can be different and many cherokees have a 21 spline count.

Your NP231j in your 99 wrangler with a AX-15,5speed has a 23 spline input shaft.
Check the cherokees spline count. if go...but you can use the front housing. If 23spline...yes but you will have to do a little modding to get the rear tail shaft to fit the driveshaft.

hagman My t-case tag reads
model 231j
ratio 272

The cherokee reads the same except the ass'y number is different does that give you any more info
thank you

distortedtj Well good news...the front housing is the same.

The "TJ" has a different tail housing than the XJ/ZJ/MJ 231 /// as it allows you to remove the rear driveshaft without loosing fluid.

Also will depend on the spline count on the 231j you found. Your t-case has a 23 spline input shaft and many of the cherokees have a 21 spline count.

hagman My front case has been cracked but i have not opened it up yet to see what else is broke. I can get a 1999 cherokee tcase for 150$
11-02-2010 10:29 PM
distortedtj Same...Yes...and no.

Depends on the year.

What is "broken" in or on your t-case?
