To the guy that said tuners do nothing for a gas engine, I disagree. I went from 15-16 to 18.5 with a SC Flashpaq on my 2007 Rubicon. Changing the shift points does make a difference.
On my 2012 with 33"s and a 2.5" lift, as well as stubby bumper and winch I avg 18.5-19 mpg mixed driving (highway/surface streets). On trips over 200 miles I avg 18 mpg doing 65-70. I just crossed 5000 miles.

20 to 30 mpg's
hi, stay with the factory 17" that come with the S package, remove the spair leave it at home, take a can of fix a flat, remove the rear seat. leave it
at home with the spair u never use, turn on the ECO and drive in that range,
trade in the 4 door for the 2 door jk, remove the 3.83 or 4.11 rear and get
the 3.21 remove oh wait , just trade in your jeep for a 2013,
or wait for the 2014 u may have the new 8 speed auto that the factory mates
to the 300. bing, you will now have 20 to 30 mpg's you could pull the motor
from a prius that should get u a few more miles, hope u had some fun reading..

HP essentially = TQ*RPM. Because energy in has to equal energy out, increasing torque OR horsepower decreases MPGs. This is why trucks, in general, see very poor mileage.
Because you can not reduce the torque your engine puts out at any given RPM--To increase MPGs with your current rig minimize stops, fast acceleration and high RPMs.
I get the best MPGs in my 12 JKU arround 50 mph. I can crack 25mpg with the AC on.

No idea about softtop, but my MPG with hardtop on/off is negligibly different. We are talking a few tenths of a mpg--nearly impossible to distinguish with a typical mixed city/hwy tank.
I am very conscious of accurate mpg calcs, these comments reflect hand calculated mpgs.

Funny, I bought my new JK to improve MPGs over my F150 5.4.... Turns out I am seeing a 35% improvement.... good for almost $1000 per year.
3.73LSD/Unlimited/32" SRAs stock/6 speed manual
3.73LSD/5.4 3v/4 speed auto/2005
Jeep: 19/23 city/hwy
Ford: 14/17 city/hwy
I don't see much possible way to improve a stock JKs MPG. If you have a lift/offroad tires/taller than stock gears your MPG will look close to 16/19.

Heck, it's a Wrangler. It's about as aerodynamic as a brick with a sail on top. Honestly...what did you expect? Seriously, in town just drive it easy (not talking about granny driving, just don't race from light to light) and on the road just keep the speed down. Aerodynamics of that nearly vertical, almost flat windshield will KILL you if you try to boggie on down the Interstate. That's exactly why I typically don't drive a Wrangler on the Interstate....they are much more comfortable on the 2 lanes...and the scenery is better anyway.

|Prelud3||I had a 2011 jku bone stock 3.23 rear end, 6 speed manual, and daily commute (mostly country roads) averages 14-16. I now have a 2012 bone stock 6 speed manual with 3.73 rear end and I average 19-20. Going to my home town about once a month, all highway but through the Ozarks 70-75 I used to get 17 tops, I now average 21. If I take the back roads, very hilly but 65 top speed I averaged 18 on old 22-23 on New. I currently have 4500 miles on my 2012. No change in driving habits. So at the minimum I save 3 cents a mile, which so far means I've saved 135 dollars. I strongly disagree with people who say the new 3.6 doesn't get better gas mileage lol.|

I've been averaging just over 20 each tank, Best I've gotten was 21.5 worst was 18.5.
Like others have said, your best bet is to drive like an old person, I love seeing how far I can roll in neutral

I have about 1000 miles on the clock of my '12 Sahara.
Pure city driving --a Stop sign every few feet and insane traffic, I get like 10-13MPG.
Combo city/hwy I'm getting about 18 and if I just do Hwy I'm getting about 23-24
Of course a month ago, I had a Mazda5 so this represents a considerable increase.
To offset the increase, I drive real smooth and real slow --both were foreign concepts to me a month ago.
I also (plan on) using my wife's Focus a bit more for short trips around town.
I did a test the other other day to and from the grocery store --about 1 mile each way. With the Jeep, I got 13MPG and with the Focus I got 26 --and I drove it hard!

|99 wrangler||Just bought a 2012 unlimited sport, it has 3.73 gears and 600 miles on it now. We are getting 19 - 20.6 mpg as of right now. Well that's what the eco display says, so far the biggest gains we have noticed come from taking off nice and easy and not going over 65 mph on the highways. I try to ALWAYS keep the rpm's in the green on that tac, but seems ti be better if we run at the top limit of the green which is about 2100 or so. Considering a cold air intake, and a programer but going to wait until we break it in more. With all that said, its a jeep and we DIDN'T buy it for mpg. Put your top down, get the sun on your face and thoughts of mpg go out the window.|

hi, i get 20 mpg city,30 hwy , 2012 ,jk 2 door soft top with auto,
i keep the ECO on all the time and drive in the 1000/2000 rpm range, it also has 17" FACTORY tires with 3.21 rear end. if you have off road tires you
will loose some mpg, if u have 3.73 or 4.11 you will drop mpg. 95 % of
my drive is on the road the 3.6 is much better than my 07 jk, got about 14 mpg with off road tires i am 100% HAPPY and look

its a simple question, yet people still have to post stupid responses. no duh its a jeep, doesnt mean a man cant try/want to improve his mpg.
i agree, driving habit is monumental. also bec of the aerodynamics, highway speed is a major factor, all mathematical equations compound for every mph you increase. it is dramatic and certain threasholds, the jeeps seems to be at about 65mph.
now as far as mechanical suggestions, re-gearing is a possibility (not knowing what you have). some have claimed a better intake and/or exaust increases power which in turn with proper driving habits will improve mpg.
or you can tie a canoe on top for better aerodynamics like the one guy on here posted.

12 jku, 33's no lift 3.21's has about 350 miles on it, got it with 129 still on first tank of gas, computer says I'm getting about 18....
I drive like a granny...not to save gas, just how I drive. If I want to haul ass, I do it in the 2012 GS vette

My 2010 with the 3.8L 2 door has given me 21 MPG several times, that's interstate driving following the speed limit. I follow the speed limit are under and really watch the traffic ahead of me coast when I need to speed up slowly.
The biggest thing is I didn't buy my wrangler for mileage I bought it to have fun.

2012 sport auto 18 inch sahara's 15-19 mpg
got a 2 1/2 inch lift, 18 inch Sahara wheels with oem tires, aftermarket front bumper and winch, driving on interstate sanely get 18 driving 80 ish get 15 driving to and from work back roads 60-65 get 17 all calculated at the gas pump on every fill up. Running regular gas a little over 4000 miles on it at the moment. a little better than my 1991 4.0 5 speed wrangler actually.

For all those people posting and reading this.....I am looking to go up to a 275/70 (33's) and was wondering if anyone on here has this setup and was wondering how much mileage they lost?
I drive 20 miles round trip to work, mostly 40-45 mph, and averaging 18.5. Its a 2012 JKU sahara with 2000miles.

|Dusthol||I get worse mileage w fuel that has ethanol. I also see better mpg using the supreme gas. I averaged any where from 16 to 12 on a 1600 mile trip towing a light trailer. 12 mpg was w a check engine lite on. Best was w supreme gas.|

|Dave7200||My 2012 now has 2500 miles on it. I have a 4 inch lift that lifted it 5 and a half inches and 35's on it. I was getting a constant 13 mpg and have not yet had enough highway time to track the mileage. I took off the front driveshaft and it went up 1 mpg. I'm not stretching it that is actually what it went up. I figured I only need 4 wheel drive here in ND in the winter so I took it off for the summer.|

stock 2012 2d manual w 3.73. 1000 miles logged.
I'm getting 17.0 mpg in city only driving. (don't exceed 40MPH)... and I drive very light footed.
Couple of thoughts / questions... Do you get worse mpg while the engine is cold? My commute is only 2 miles one way. By the time i'm 3/4ths the way there in the morning, it completely warms up.
Has anyone analyzed the mpg benefit (if any) for using ethanol free gasoline? There's an ethanol free gas station close to my house, but it's 15-20 cents more per gallon compared to a station that may contain up to 10% ethanol.
