why not get any kind you like and have them powder coated. even better is if that's your plan, you can get them used in any servicable condition. rust and alloy oxidation is easily sandblasted off. I once did a set of rims for a friend's Taurus. They were just his winter rims which were basic, cheap iron rims. By the time I was done, he had cheap $150 rims with a $600 powder job. ..blast, zinc primer powder, wet black color, metal speck clear. He said his mechanic's jaw dropped when he put the winter rubbers on for him. LOL

Yeah, it's all about where you live. some places get more ice than others. In my group of friends, I would guess 1/2 have slid off the road or into a rail of some sort during their time here and they get their studs on like it's regulation. ..many are long time alaskans, 30-40 yr residents, so we're not talking about wild 20 yr old hillbillies blasting around the streets. One look around the parking lot in ANY rural alaskan town tells a tale of how bad winter roads can be -- i'm talking about all the brand spanking new vehicles with side panel body damage, but are otherwise in sparkling new condition. Get studs if you can, what is there to lose?
Okay, some of them are hillbillies but they're 50yrs old, not 20. haha.

|asianhulk||depends on where you live in AK, and where you live in town. I personally think, give yourself the best chance and run studs. Some people say all seasons are fine, even some Alaska folks (sister is guilty of that lol) but I think all seasons are good for moderate snow. Most places no longer allow studded tires because of all the damage it causes to the roads but Anchorage still allows them. Why? I believe they are important.|

|jackor||almost everyone I know goes to studs in the winter. Some areas are more prone to road icing. there is one hill street/driveway here that I guarantee rubber tires cannot roll up in the winter...it is steep, multi level, and goes to hard ice all the time. studs negotiate the parking lot up there no problem....now walking when you get out is another challenge if you don't wear ice traction on the shoes.|

To each your own, but I'm in fairbanks and I've got some knobbier All Terrain tires that I run year round. I get around just fine usually. The only exception was in the Nov. 2010 ice storm when all 4 tires would be spinning and I was still sliding sideways with a little forward momentum. Everybody had problems for those 2 or 3 days, even those with studded tires, although I'd think that they would have been better off than my jeep.
Anyhow, that was 1 day out of the last 3 years that I've had it here in Alaska.
I mostly leave it in 2 wheel drive unless things get slick or possibly unpredictable. I also drop it into 4 WD at some intersections, but I've always been told that it is bad to drive in 4WD on dry pavement. I also hate getting horrible gas mileage, but not as much as I hate going in the ditch.
Anyways. No studs for me. 4WD when needed.
Black rims? There's a couple of brands that are really common on Jeeps. There are a ton of threads on it and I think that there is a "sticky" on it under the "Wheels and Tires" section.

|shayno||I don't have. New jeep like that but I do have a all wheel drive car and a front wheel drive and I wouldn't go through winter without studs on any of them. My yj is almost impossible to drive with mud terrains... im gonna get smaller studded winter tires for it so I can actually drive it.|

On my 06 TJ I have Nokian studs all around, I think they are the only way to go.
I travel in 2WD and use 4WD when things get bad.

Should I buy Studs
Just bought a 2012 Wrangler Sport, my question is, should I buy studs or will I be ok with the all weather it came with?
I have not slid until today when I slowed from 50 fast on ice, I could feel the back end wanting to fishtail. Should I put weight in the back?
Third, do I keep it in 4wd all the time on these roads?
