|eScott||Thanks for the reply. My heater core is defiantly blocked, so I have it soaking in CLR now. The hoses are fairly new since the PO replaced the motor, radiator and hoses about 64k miles ago. Hopefully this will fix the problem, although I rarely need a heater it would be nice for it to work.|

If the rest of the system is working OK, then it is likely a blocked heater core, as compared to a restricted one. If it is blocked, you may have an issue where there is a flap of the inner layer of the heater hose blocking the entrance.
First try one of the methods of flushing the heater core. You can also disconnect the hoses from the engine to perform it. If you have flow in one direction and not the other, it is likely a flap inside the hose. If the hoses are questionable at all, it is cheap, and best, to replace them.
If it is blocked, I would try and soak it. Drop the hose ends to below the heater and drain out as much liquid as possible. Raise the hose ends above the heater and pour in the clr. Leave sit for 30 minutes. Then drop one hose below the heater into a bucket and see what comes out.
If about at much water as the heater core would hold comes out, then you can apply water to the top hose and see what comes out. You can switch back and forth between the hoses and you don't have to buy the flush kit.
Of course the flush kit gives more control and is somewhat easier.

I had the same problem, I flushed my heater core and have great heat now. I posted a pic of what I set up for flushing it.

I had the exact same problem a few months back -
I did the "hand test" and realized that indeed my heater core had become somewhat clogged - but not blocked (there is a difference).
Started off by buying two 5/8 inch hose splice kits each including two clamps and one brass insert each.
My remedy was to cut both hoses (1 one intake and 1 exhaust) from the heather core. I then proceeded to use a garden hose to flush out the heater core (you wouldn't believe the crud that came out of there). When I flushed, I did a multi directional thing, switching back and forth on both hoses.
I also use an air compressor to blow out more crud.
After the air, I poured some CLR into the heater core and let it soak for about 20 minutes. If you thought you flushed curd from the heater core withe the initial water and air - wait till you see what CLR does........ After the soak, I flushed, and flushed again withe wather and compressed air.
Total time counting soaking was about 40 min
Once I got nothing but good clean water going both directions, I spliced my hoses together. Brought the engine up to temp, checked for leaks -and now have had HOT air (not warm - unless I want it) - double checked the fluid level and haven't looked back
NOTE -the CLR was used in the heater core ONLY - and did not make contact with any other internal parts......

|Cajunjay21||I just had my heater core changed last week. $45 for the core and $400 to install it. But now my instrument panel lights aren't working. I took it back, and they cannot figure it out. Any ideas?|

Warm up the vehicle and check the hoses by hand.
Before the thermostat opens there should be coolant flow through the heater hoses. As the temp gets up to normal that supply hose from the engine should be too hot to hold tight. Maybe hold loosely. The return hose from the heater (with the fan blowing strong) should be somewhat cooler and comfortable to hold. If it is not very warm coming out, but hot going in, then you have restricted flow in the heater.
You need to be somewhat careful if back flushing the heater with a hose, as there is a lot more pressure from a garden hose if the system is plugged.
If there is restricted flow there can be a couple reasons. There can be a restriction in the hoses. That would usually be where the water enters and a flap of the inside of the hose as come loose and is blocking.
If I had a restricted core, I would get some solvent for flushing radiators. Remove both heater hoses at the engine. Pour the solvent into the one hose and keep the other one high. You want both hoses above the heater. Once you have filled them, let them sit for a period. Then flush and see how much flow you have.
Also, check and make sure you got a good thermostat. When it opens the top heater hose should heat up to where you cannot hold it. If not, then it is opening too soon.

make sure you have a air hole in the t stat and place it at 12 oclock ,, if not you may be air bound .
i fought this for a week , i flushed and flushed with no help then i drilled a small hole ,, now all good

+1 on the plugged heater core.
I have a 06' and in Michigan on the coldest days, my heater will just about put 3 rd degree burns on my feet....and thats having a soft top. These TJ's are a whole lot different for heat than my old CJ's from the late 70's.

All winter my heater has been blowing luke warm air and when it's below 30 F. you can barely feel it. I changed the thermostat and nothing, blowing the same cold air. Antifreeze is fine and it blows out okay, just cold. Any ideas?
