I just bought a 94 with a 4 banger. I actually like the 4 cyl but that's me. No it doesn't have a ton of power, but it does get better milage then the 6 cyl I had before and it holds it's own when off road. I'm getting ready to rebuild mine.
Watch for rust around the back shackle on the rear springs. I know this has been brought up already, but that is a very common problem.

|The Sos||When I bought mine it had/has a nasty rust spot at the left rear shackle. I know the frame will be replaced in the next couple of years. Mine has a built 4.2 and I see no problems with it except it is somewhat hard to get running in the cold. If you do go for the older YJ stay away from the one with the Peugeot transmission that they put in for half of 89.|

|bluvikng||I have a 89 YJ, and I like it very much. But being in the area that your in, I would make sure that the rust level, was at a minimum. We don't have that problem, here in TX...... I almost forgot, I fuel injected my 350 Chevy engine. Fuel injection, rulz........|

i have a 4.2L 89 with a webber carb it run's great i haven't had any problems i get about 450-500 km to 50.oo bucks CAD on average
i would look for the u-joints and the rear frame buy the back tires see if it is soft
also i would look at any chrome checkered plate covers they are great for hiding rust and rote but eh thats just my 2 cents

|reevesdieselyj||I hated my 4.2l it was doggy and got 10mpg in town oh yea it also knocked if I accelerated over 2,000 r's. Ok so it was worn out but hey it still sucked.|

definately avoid 4.2 motor, you will be happier with 4.0 if you want more of a problem free running motor. i had a 4 banger, i wheeled it, but i would recommend the 4.0 much more. 4 cyl does not get good gas mileage, basically same as 6. 4.0 is a great motor, and i'm currently building a stroker out of one, plenty of possibilities with it.
look for rust on floor boards, and on the edges of the rocker panel where floor board meets side of tub. look for rust at rear of frame, and body mounts. look for cracks where seat bolts to body. and look for rot on windshield frame towards bottom.
you can find some great buys on them now, i would recommend 4.0 w/ 5 speed.

i do live in michigan so i do expect alot of rust or course, i heard 20 dollers for a tank of gas for the 4 cly which would be awesome, anyone know how much for a 6 cly?
I alos plan on making it a project jepp a small lift 3 inches and some 31 tires not to much but to have a good time with it

Start off with where you live as diferent areas have different problems (as in rust).
Stay away for the 90's and down as they will have a 4.2 which runs a carb. You will like fuel injection better
Most peoeple are not happy with the 4 cylinder engine, that is your call.
All stock YJ's have a D30 front axle and this can be beefed up to work for a long time depending on what you want to do. They also all have a D35 rear axle (this is a very weak link)
It all depends on what you want to do with it.
Mine is still Nearly Stock But you may want to modify yours some.

buying a yj major problem areas?
Hi everyone, im looking into buying yj jeep pretty soon, i plan on checking them out and was wondering if there are any major areas i should look at for problems with the jeep. and any other advice is also welcome thank you.
