this. dont put it in 4 or your t-case will commit suicide

Imped You don't have to pull the drive shaft....just don't shift the t-case into 4hi or low. Your front output simply free-spins to the tune of your ring/pinion ratio so it's not doing any harm and it doesn't know the difference between properly geared or not when in 2wd. FYI, $1300 for just the front is outrageous. It shouldn't cost you more than $600 or so.

fshields1 If you still have stock gears in the front you can drive it if you pull the front driveshaft until you get the front regeared. And as far as 1300 to do it sounds like a lot you can get the gears and install kit for under 300 and labor should be closer to 300-400 if done at a professional shop. If you are a proficient mechanic and have (or invest in) a dial indicator and do some research on pinion depth, perload, and back lash, you should be able to do it in a day.

Need advice on regearing!!

I recently put in a ford 8.8 axle from east coast gear supply which was re-geared to 4.56. My front end is stock. Can I drive at all without screwing things up? My local mechanic wants 1300 to regear the front end, is this reasonable? Im thinking it may be best to just buy a dana 44 for the front end instead of dumping 1300 on a regear. What should I do?
