Master4th I noticed when I was looking up the part on

That there where 2 different flex plates listed. One for 1981 - 83, 1987, and the other for 1988.

Im wondering if some of the 88's might have gotten the old 87 flexplate. Which apparently was bigger.

What transmission do you have?

SimpsonWrangler Also, all the holes are staggered. Won't go on any other way. I have a feeling I got a bum flexplate where the ring gear was welded on wrong...

SimpsonWrangler No, installed exactly as the old one came out. And as for shims, there weren't any. If I shimmed, it would be even further away from the ring gear...

Master4th Did your starter have any shims on it when you reinstalled it?

HELP! Changed flexplate

Changed the flexplate in my 88 Wrangler YJ 4.2. Now my starter doesn't engage the teeth on the flexplate. It seems the starter teeth, when hitting the key, need another 1/4 inch at least to even touch the teeth. WTH? I've checked multiple parts sites to make sure I got the correct flexplate and they all show the same part number that I ordered.
It's like the gear that is welded around the flexplate has a different offset than my old flexplate.
I have two choices here. Try to find a different flexplate and replace it again or find a starter with a deeper cone.
Does anyone know another year Jeep that has a deeper coned starter that will fit mine????
