I thought with new shocks it would be softer but would also lean much more.. i was very wrong. For now my jeep actually stays on the ground instead of bounce around on every hole.
Just to let people know what its like.. you ever see a semis tires hit a hole and bounce? well its the same thing here but the hole jeep jumps instead of just the tire.

I thought i might add to the thread...
i have RC lift and replaced the crappy RC shocks with some OMEs. Great difference in ride. You can barely feel most of the bumps now while before it was another story. Before my jeep was bouncing around with them slow moving shocks but now my tires are actually on the ground thanks to the OMEs. With them my jeep also leans much less than it did with the RCs even though they were very hard.

I put new 35" Extreme MTs on today. Great price on blems (i dont need no stinking white walls) 5 for 700 delivered. 2 balanced under 2oz, one at one ounce and 2 that were rough. No different than when I did 35 Extreme ATs on my excursion. 2 good and 2 bad...
Anyway, the tranny is now perfect!! I need first gear and I corner in second where before I was easily cornering in 3d. No more 2-4-6...I love it and it looks better as well.

granny first makes alot of sense...especially if it were designed that way. I used a suburban back in the day for hunting and it was the same. First time I drove it I was railed for using first. I was quickly enlightened on its use for towing or pulling or crawling. Same as I have now, once in first and clutch out it is time for shifting...<5mph like the Sub.
I loved my older jeeps, all YJs and all had same tranny...AX15 and all had 33s...and I have always thought there were set up better than this one. Close ratio is for sports cars and racing. Are the sport or rubis set up differently or do all newer 6spd have same ratios behind them as far as gearing, not axles ratios.
Thanks again for help, do not like idea of swapping to an AX15 tho...35 MTZs sound great.

Gotcha, I see what you are saying and you are probably right. Sounds like an older AX15 manual 5sp is more of what you would like. They were in Pre-2003's I believe.
Oh, and 35's are always the answer.

you could swap in an older model 5spd, but 1BLKJP is right. regearing is really the better thing to do. your 6spd is geared to mesh with the 3.73s and 30" tires, which it does well with. by lowering the gears to compliment your 33s, you bring everything back to close to where it was factory. meaning you will get those better shift points back.
i have not heard of different ratios for the tranny, and swapping in a different tranny is going to be more of a pain than it is worth.
i ran my 02 TJ with the 4.0L, 5spd, 3.73s, and 33s and with that setup i was begging for lower gears.
from what i understand, the 1st gear with the 6spd tranny is more of a granny gear anyway, so starting in 2nd is pretty common.

Thanks for the reply, but I think my first gear is to low now which is why I normally do second gear starts unless on incline. If I went to 4.56 or something lower, I would be able to do 3rd gear starts (possibly). I am turning about 2k rpms in 6th at 50-55ish. I normally drive around 50 in 6th to/from work. Lower gears would screw that up to the point I would turn 2500 in town at 50. That is not the answer. Do I have a diff tranny or diff set of trany gears that others?
A big reason for lifting it was I thought it was geared too low to start with (and I hate the postal jeep look with steel trailer tires on it) Before lift, we never used 1st, now it is occasionally used. Maybe 35s are the answer, I know I have the room to fit 'em!!

I know you said that you like the 3.73's, but honestly if you moved up to a 4.56 or 4.88 axle gear then you would elminate all of the problems you are describing with the tranny.
Personally when I was daily driving my TJ with a 6" lift I used Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks. I really liked them for streetability. And around 80 bucks a piece are much cheaper than Bilsteins.

New Gear Sets?
Long time listener, first time caller....
I have an 05 TJ X 6SP, 4.0L, 3.73s with everyones favorite, a 4 or 5 inch RC Lift (I think I have a 4 inch lift that netted closer to 5, installed for me for 840) with 33 XTs and numerous other tidbits.
It is rough, but it is a Jeep.
My issue is in gearing, not axles. I think the X came with a close ratio 6spd and I hate it. It is closer to the old 3spds with hi/low option. I can drive all day 2-4-6 even with 33s. There really isn't a gear I like. I mean 6th is great if it were 5th. 1st needs to be taller by a little as do the rest. I like the 3.73 gears so I do not think that a change there will help. Is there a different gear set to swap out of the tranny to get gearing I like? Can I just get one from dealer from a diff model (rubi, sport) that is better for me?
Love the Jeep, my 4th only. Just need to fix tranny.
Last question is shocks. I read a bunch and would I be happier with Bilsteins? The lift is more than 2 years old and shocks have not broke in a bit. I thought it would get better by now. It does not take speed bumps or curbs or off camber bumps at speed for crap.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
