Now for the front axle, is the 30 strong enough and would I be able to use the factory carrier with 4.56's or would i need to change that out?
Could I use a carrier out of a 2.5l wrangler?

I think im gonna take it easy with the 35 and build an 8.8. I'm thinking a Spartan locker or lock right with 4.56 gears. Just for that extra precaution. Lol.
Do they make 4.56's for a Ford 8.8?

|YJPete||Talking about the pros and cons of the 35 always stirs up some contention. I've got mine locked with 4.88 and I've never had any problems. If you beat the hell out of it, or your main strategy over obstacles is "floor it" you'll probably break it though. Just be gentle and it'll be fine.|

True and not. I have seen guys without lockers try to get thru things anyway. They back up and full throttle rev limit to get the wheel speed up. This can be super dangerous IMHO. I have gone thru things with my locker at a slow pace with little throttle that the guy/s in front of my had to floor it..back up ... floor it again and again. Sometimes finally they get thru it. I just motor thru the first time with little throttle effort, at most some feathering of the throttle.
There have been situations where I have had to goose it some even with a locker but....
There is nothing wrong with autolockers of the axel can take the abuse. There is also not really any issues with welding diffs either if it's an offroad only rig. I've driven many vehicles with full spool'd rearends and they can be a handfull on the road sometimes.

|banks316||If you don't have the money to do it right then don't do it at all. Lockers is not always the answer for more traction. Experience, proper tire pressure, correct tread pattern for the condition.|

If you weld the diff on a d35 and daily drive it. It WILL break axels. The hpping and chirping is what will break it.
Frankly locking a d35 with 35's is pushing it anyway. IMHO i have 32's and am locked with the spartan. It worries me sometimes, an 8.8 is in my future for sure. Already gathering parts for the swap and regear.

|banks316||Dont weld a DD, it will hop, chrip every time you turn. It will also wear tires out very quickly.|

Neither does the OP but that's where my experience is coming from at least. Can't speak for big tires on the six, my 4.2L CJ has stock tires.

|banks316||Interesting im running 4.56 with very heavy 37 12.50 R16.5 and have no issues with power. Doing 70mph on the freeway isnt an issue. That was before I built my 4.7L|

|hillbillyYJ||Hmm, that is true. But I drive it everyday 30 miles to work and 30 more coming back. I think I may stick with 4.56's. If i don't like the power I get with a 35/4.56 combo, I could always go back to 33 inch tires.|

|YJPete||If you want more power with those 35s then you'll want it up to 4.88. I'm running that myself, no complaints here. 4.56 is a slightly more fuel-friendly choice, but it wont be quite as peppy.|

|hillbillyYJ||Thanks for all of the idea's I don't plan on going any bigger than 35's after I do a spring over axle and make tube fenders. So I will probably go with the 4.56's so i will have plenty of power to the ground.|

|YJPete||As far as gears go, I'd go 4.27 or if you plan on upping it to 35s later on then go ahead and do 4.56. As far as lockers go, I cast my vote for detroit based on my experience with it. Not exactly cheap, but really reliable.|
