I had an '06 KJ for 7 weeks before I traded it for the LJ. I got 14mpg with the stock Libby - auto tranny. I get 16 with the Unlimited with 32s and 2" lift - 6 speed. Anyway - personally, I hated the Liberty. It just felt like a chick car to me. Lifted with the right tire/wheel combo though they look okay I guess.
I also had issues with the ESP and ABS that Chrysler could not resolve. The day I returned it, (for a full refund), they told me DC came out with a flash for the problem. I told them the next owner will probably appreciate it, give me the LJ.

A liberty will get better mpg than a wrangler.. reason is liberty has less drag.
Boss had one that we used to drive around as a backup vehicle and my experience with it.. to me the steering was very annoying because the steering wheel was just way too thin and uncomfortable and also it straightened out way too much. Like the spring or whatever straightens out the steering wheel was way too hard. Next problem was rear window visibility. I couldn't see anything out of it. Other than that, it was quite nice. It sounded like it had subs in the doors too.

I always kind of liked the liberties. As was said, they have much more room than a wrangler, and much more comfortable every day.
The downsides, gas mileage will be the same as a wrangler, and in some cases worse (same as my rubicon, worse than the Xs and Sports that claim 18-20 highway in a wrangler). You loose the convertible factor. Finally, and my biggest gripe with the liberty, you have to find one with the selectable 4WD. From what I understand there are 3 different types of 4wd systems on liberties. I am only familar with 2, so I will just explain those. One, is fwd in 2wd. When placed into 4wd, it STAYS in 2wd, until the computer detects the tires spinning, than it kicks it into 4wd. My buddy rented a liberty when his car was in the shop, and it had this system. It snowed that day, and he actually took it to my house, parked it, and had me drive him around in the wrangler. It deffinatly is funky, and takes some getting used to. Not something I would drive. From my understanding, there is then the system like our jeeps. 2wd = fwd, 4hi=instant 4wd, and 4lo. I believe there is also a system like the grand cherokees, but I could be wrong.
EDIT: Be careful when choosing the 4WD system also. The one that my buddy rented, where the computer controlled the 2wd to 4wd switch during tire spinning, looked like my Wranglers transfer case on the inside. What I mean is, it had 2Hi -4 HI - N - 4 Lo transfer case stick like our wranglers do, but when placed into 4Hi, the computer waited until tire spin was detected. I guess thats good to save gas mileage, and save the transfer case from idiots that put it in 4wd when its not needed, but if you are stuck and need 4wd, there is the chance that it will not be able to engage (All transfer cases generally need to have the vehicle move a tad for the gears to line up).
With that said, if you are considering a liberty just to get a vehicle faster, its not worth it. Get what you want the first time. I think everyone thats older than 18 has made the mistake of "giving in" to a vehicle that they did not nesessarily want. Its going to be just as hard to find a liberty with the instant 4wd system, as it will be to find a decent TJ in your price range.

|jpdocdave||i had a liberty for my wife, its a good vehicle, but its not at all what a wrangler is. it isn't gonna tow well anyway. i like what the yjguy said, good idea.|

When "Silver (tj "06)" was in this winter for wart. repair, they allowed me to use a Libby for the day and it handle pretty nice.

Haggle yourself a good deal with the Liberty and get an older TJ to mod, something like a '97-'99 for a few grand.
A buddy of mine has a Liberty, and just put a 3" Skyjacker on it. Looks pretty sweet if you as me.

wrangler vs liberty
i know its probably a moot point to even ask this on these boards, but what the hell? lol
so as some of you probably know from my other 2 threads that i started, im looking to get a vehicle. i was pretty set on the wrangler (tj), but my main draw for the wrangler regardless of the generation was the drop top and the 4wd.
after some unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a deal for a wrangler, i started looking at other options...out of desperation. and i found that the liberty is also a not so bad vehicle. capable off-roader, more space, better towing capacity. so it got me thinking...what would be more "practical" for me, while at the same time still fun? a wrangler or a liberty?
if i decide to move, im gonna have to rent a trailer, which might be tough with a soft-top wrangler, an issue the liberty shouldnt have. however, no wind-in-my-hair driving in the liberty. im torn. so i thought id just open up the discussion. not necessarily for me, but just because im curious what others' thoughts on this is.
