Touch up piant job help

I tried to do a touch up paint job on my jeeps hood and the color is correct it just looks rough and dull compared to the factory paint. I'm not looking for perfection per say just to blend the paint to make it less noticeable. I thought about getting a high grit sand paper (1,000 or higher) to smooth it out and then apply a clear coat. I tried asking my friends for some advice but all I get is 'bring to a shop'. I'm a do it my selfer and I really don't want spend 500 on a paint job that will get covered in mud anyway haha. Any advice to clean up the paint myself would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.
