ok im lost on what the origonal poster is actually asking, what is moving a half inch?
your clutch disk can move a little, it has springs on it for that purpose. do you mean the little pilot bearing in the crankshaft?
nothing can really go wrong with a flywheel other than cracking it or overheating it by riding the clutch.

lighter flywheel frees up some low end torquees too since the motor has to turn less weight..
In a 2 cylinder i understand but a 6 cylinder has 3 power strokes per revolution....

|4.0l sahara||I was just reading on a jeep stroker forum that light wait flywheels will allow it to rev up quick but thats not what the 4,0 is made for with it's long stroke. The heavy fly wheel helps keep the engien running when crawling at low speeds. So a light flywheel for a 4.0 is just dumb. It's not a drag motor.|

well lighter flywheel will make the engine idle rougher however it will rev much faster. For rock crawling with an automatic transmission you will get much "crispier" response when you step on the gas and much more control of the engine when you step on the gas. Since the engine has less inertia it will also help out with mpg, shifts during city driving and at last free up some power.
It will be a bit tougher on the Manual Trannies since you will have to depend on the gas to keep you moving as the engine will be easier to stall (like Jerry noted above) however the engine will rev friendlier.
A buddy of mine just installed a light flywheel on his TC and now it pulls much more. You can easily notice the difference. The shifts are not as hard however it pulls much harder throughout the entire rpm range. It idles a bit harder but after all its a 4 banger.

Here is a fly wheel with the presure plate and clutch.
This is a flexplate that is on a auto and connects to the tourque converter.

tranny fluid level is good. so you are saying that there is no flexplate on flywheel on manual transmision!!! I'am talking about flywheel that presure plate is attached(scrued) to, and the clutch disk sits between them.
Here is a picture of my TJ, cant wait for warmer weather to take the top off, after I fix it....

|4.0l sahara||Did you check the tranny fluid level? Also it's common for the sycros to wear out on the ax5 and cause hard shifting. Even more so if the wrong fluid is used.|

Hi people, I got a little problem with my little pride. First to introduce my self here, I am kind of new to wrangler world bit I got hooked on it . So I bought a 2003 TJ SE 2.4 5-speed. But ever since I bought it the shifting was not so smooth (like grinding when shifting from first to second or second to third gear) and my first reaction was that the clutch was bad. And now I decide to put a new clutch in. So after taking it all apart and puting new clutch kit in and everything back toagether, the problem remains the same if not wors (sorry for my spelling). While everything was apart I've also taken the flywheel off and noticed that so called "flexplate" that sits on flywheel, moves freely on flywheel back and forth about half inch or more. And the "flexplate is not as tight to the flywheel as I think it should be, it kind a has that play back and forth up and down if u know what I mean. So my question is should I replace the flywheel or what? A I just came back from dealer and they only list a regular flywheel and not the one my TJ uses which is the one (flywheel and flexplate toagether). And they could not even tell me if the flywheel they list is the upgrade for mine or anything. Please help....
