marcusandamie Hi, so I managed to replace the U joint a few weeks ago, but the same thing happened on my 97 Sahara. When I took off the slip yoke or slip yoke eliminator ( I'm not sure which it is!) I made the mistake of rolling it forward and now the pinion that the sye/sy slides onto isn't centred and I can't slide it on enough to bolt it down.

There's the bearings that are inside the rear differential housing seem ok, likewise with the seal but even by turning the wheels the pinion does not want to come out enough!

What else can I do?

Thanks in advance!!

PeteH Sorry, I meant "REAR" driveshaft.

PeteH Unless you have a BIG vise, or a big hammer and a friend to help you position the thing, you may have trouble pressing out the universals. If you decide to do it yourself, Look for an article (probably in one of these forums) on how to do it.

Personally, it's not a job I relish... I'd rather take the whole shaft out and take it to a shop. Shouldn't cost much - a local US shop quoted me $50, last year, to do the read driveshaft.

Redsand unless you have a slipyoke dont drive with the rear shaft out, it will spray fluid everywhere, u joints are easy to change, you need an old socket and a bfh

REDBUSH sounds like you u joint is bad. if your napa has a shop i would remove the drive shaft and have them remove and install the new u joint

is your jeep lifted????

jp2611 Haven't actually had that happen..but have had a few u-joints replaced. I did watch the mechanic change them (that sounds bad watching isn't doing) anyway from what I have gathered.....You could remove other u-joint so that axle is free (and put inside your Jeep) and shift into 4wd and drive home using the front wheel power and than work on it.

I understand (from posts on here), and (when I watched them repair mine) it didn't appear to be too tough of a fix if you have the right parts...and basic tools will work.

Help!! Newbie here!

Hi guys,
Sorry im new to this, so may have posted in the wrong place! if so, i'm sorry!! I'm extremely 'mechanically challenged' and dont know very much about cars, espcially jeeps!
I live in the british virgin isles, and bought a 1997 Jeep wrangler sahara 4.0L 2 weeks ago. Its VERY hilly here, and therefor needed a 4WD. When i was driving up our hill where i live, i head a massive crunch/bang and a lot of banging from underneath near the rear axel.

I stopped immediately and looked underneath. It appears the bracket holding the rear universal joint have snapped clean off, leaving it hanging down, it turned when i had to cringe and tried to drive it out of the way of on coming cars! i'm guessing its the universale joint, which turns the back axel (?) all the bearings have gone, but the drive shaft (again ??) still look intact, just the joint connecting the two has snapped!

Has any got any ideas, or suggestions on how i can fix this, we have a napa here, but their very 'unreliable' if i need to get parts! but im strugglign other wise! i have pictures if my description is very vague!

Thank you!!!!!
