Xjman1 I just did some maintenance on my '01's cooling system as well. I was running just like yours, 210*, with no issues and also towed a small trailer(4'x8' with atv) up I-5 grade to Gorman with same result around 215*.
I also bought my Jeep used and did not know previous owners upkeep and smelled coolant from time to time. Further inspection revealed she had a small leak on the top radiator tube house mount.
I replaced my water pump, fan clutch, thermostat housing, thermostat, coolant and hoses with parts from Mopar($345 - get the hoses at the parts store, Mopar gives it to you hard on them) and took my brass radiator to have it soldered and tank boiled($28). After all was done my Jeep now runs right at 195*. I have let it sit and idle where it would go up to around 215* before and she just purrs at 195*.
I feel much more confident now with summer coming to go run some trails. Oh yeah I also installed a transmission cooler since I had the radiator out. It adds capacity and helps keep tranny in check as we will be towing a small pop up tent now.

While a lower temperature thermostat may be tempting, going with any temperature thermostat other than the factory specified 195 degree model is a bad decision. The engine computer (ECM), engine, and smog system were all designed and programmed around that 195 degree thermostat. Not to mention that on a hot day, the engine will not run any cooler with a 180 than it will with a 195 degree thermostat. Plus on a cool or cold day, an engine running a lower temperature thermostat than the factory specified 195 degree model won't pass many of the various state smog tests.

My Jeep

My 98 Wrangler (4.0) was running the same temperature.

I noticed a coolant smell over the last several weeks and saw a small split in my upper radiator seam.

I decided on a replacement and went with a NAPA # 3060 which was supposed to have a brass tank. Upon opening the box, I found that it had a plastic tank instead. I also decided to install a new 180 thermostat and coolant.

All I can say was that the radiator was an EXCELLENT fit with no alteration to any of the bolt holes. The shroud went on perfect and you would think that it was all factory parts. I think I had about $160.00 in all of it.

My Wrangler runs at 190 degrees and I'm happy as hell. Oh BTW, NAPA told me to save the receipt and original box and if the radiator ever fails, bring it on back for a new one.

SoGaJeep Thanks for the information. That makes me feel a lot better.
I'm not sure what the last person that own the Jeep used. I flush the radiator right after I bought it and I always use distilled water to mix with coolants.

Jerry Bransford Those temps are fine. On cleaning a radiator, you can't rod them out like we used to be able to do with radiators that are soldered together. These are crimped and sealed and they can't be resealed once opened up. About the best you can do is a chemical flush which can get rid of hard water desposits like lime and calcium that can form if tap water is used in the radiator. To prevent such buildups, always use distilled water to mix with coolants.

But again, your temps sound fine. That's not to say your radiator may not be close to needing to be chemically cleaned if you've been using tap water in it.

Normal Engine Temp????

I bought my Jeep back in the fall when the temps were cool. The temp gauge always stayed just under 210 degrees. Now that it's warming up my temp gauge is staying right at 210 degrees or if I run the A/C it goes over 210 just a little. I towed my four wheeler on a small trailer and the temp gauge I would say got up to 215 degrees.
I was thinking about pulling the radiator out and have it cleaned...
Are these engine temp reading normal for a 2001 4.0 6 cyl automatic?
