With an auto tranny you have to be in N to shift into or out of 4lo. With the tranny in gear you have a load against the gears, and because you are changing gear ranges that load will make it hard or impossible, It is like trying to shift an un-synchronized manual trans without using the clutch.
Now, 2h to 4h can be done while in gear beacause you are not changing gear ranges, just engaging or disengaging the front axle. Hope this makes sense?

Hilldweller Read the manual for the correct method of shifting into 4-Lo.
If you're already in a mess and can't move and want to get into 4-Lo, put the Jeep in neutral and shut it off; now grab a hold and shift it all the way down in one shot.

It will loosen up after a few weeks.

kbart All need to be done while moving. 2H to 4H can be at just about any speed under say 50mph. Into N or 4L and back to 4H should be at a slow roll like a California rolling stop but with the clutch in or AT in neutral. If you are in 4WD and turning left or right it will be hard to shift out until you straighten out and reduce the driveline binding.
